What’s better than one whale shark? 11 whale sharks! 👏🏽🦈
Recently, the Aquarium’s Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life aerial survey team flew over the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument and had a record-breaking day in the air.
The team spotted 11 whale sharks during their flight, the most we’ve ever documented on a single Monument flight! At least one of the whale sharks was even photographed feeding.
Fun fact: Whale sharks are sharks, not whales! They get their name from their enormous size and the fact that they feed on tiny plankton, much like some whales do. But whale sharks are fish, and they’re the largest fish in the world.
