To be held in a gaze that lifts us, loves us and yet grounds us, is an absolute privilege.

That was the gaze of these women and girls from prc i got to perform for, for the first iteration of ‘Ban, Carbon, Varna’. Thank you , ids and for inviting us and offering us the space to do what we did.

Thank you .hashiya for shooting, editing and putting together this video! I still can’t believe that you just did it! So much love. You make me speechless.

Bante, bante hi sab kuch banta hai,nahin?

It takes a lot of effort to build something- anything. You would know. After all, we are all always banao-ing one thing or another in our lives. Just like Dharti maiya, our dear mother earth, forever cooking carbon for us to consume. Like a non-stop kitchen. No? With a little help from minions in our world.
Minions whom we sometimes remember, on some special days and special months and sometimes not. You can always do an intensive revision. No?

But yes, it will be stupid to assume that the kitchen mentioned is a non-stop thing. It is not. But some straights and not-so-straights, go bigul-bajaoing, maane trumpeting, in places they have no business being- other people’s straits!

All in the hope that their private kitchens can keep running, on and on.

Ab usmein ban jale, kisi ka carbon jale ya kisi aur varna ka kuch aur.
(Now whether a forest burns or somebody’s stored up carbon or the homes of some lesser beings, what does it matter?)

Why should they bother?

क्या आपने कभी 91 लाख नाम एक साथ कहीं देखे हैं?

मैंने नहीं देखे।

ज़्यादा से ज़्यादा शायद ट्रेन के रिज़र्वेशन चार्ट पर कुछ चार-पाँच सौ नाम देखे होंगे,

या शायद उससे भी कम ही होंगे।

हँसी आती है, नहीं?

पिछले साल बोर्ड्स , वही दसवीं और बारहवीं के इम्तेहान में 42 लाख बच्चे बैठे थे,

यू पी एस सी में 13.4 लाख,

ए आई ट्रिपल ई में 14 लाख से ऊपर थे और डॉक्टरी के लिए २३ लाख,

इन सबको जोड़ कर कुछ 92 लाख नाम होते हैं,

चलिए कुल मिलाकर 91 लाख से एक लाख ज़्यादा थे।

सोचिये अगर एक साल ये सारे नाम मिटा दिए जाते।

किसी का रिजल्ट नहीं आता।

जैसे तुमने कभी इम्तिहान ही नहीं दिया हो।

बवाल मच जाता।

ख़बरें आग पकड़ लेतीं, ज़ुबान कारतूस बन जाती

जो अपने आप को मिडिल क्लास कहते हैं

वो सड़क पे उतर आते

“हमारे भविष्य का सवाल है।”

हम ये कहते, दोहराते, और दोहराते ही रहते।

किसी जप की तरह,

और कहते हुए कभी लड़खड़ाते नहीं ।

ग़ुस्सा बेल की तरह गर्दनों पर कसा रहता

गर्मी आकर चली जाती और बारिश ज़मीन को छूते ही उड़ जाती

इतना तप।

शायद कोई मूरख कहता कि बच्चे, आपको ग़लत याद है,

नादान हो, हम तो तुम्हारे शुभचिंतक हैं, ये सब भूल जाओ,

हम जाँच-पड़ताल करेंगे,

कोर्ट-सीबीआई खेलेंगे,

सब कुछ ठीक हो जाएगा।

ये नयी ऊँची आवाज़ क्यों ढूंढते हो?

बस, हमारा ये जंतर-मंतर पढ़ते रहना।

ये पढ़ते रहना।

घी की तरह ये बातें गिरती

बसों में, दफ्तरों में, सड़कों पे

हर जगह लपटें फैलती - धुरंधर सी हवा होती

सिनेमा घर बंद हो जाते

और तुम और मैं मुंह ताकते

मगर जवाब मांगना बंद नहीं होता

थकते, गिरते, पिटते, मगर उठते ही रहते

91 लाख नाम आज भी मिटे हैं

Who holds the key to our visibility?
Who unlocks the ways in which we will be seen or not seen?
This year the TransDayofVisibility holds a special relevance.
The law goes far.
Memory, further.
Then there are our own need to hide and reveal.
I explore in this piece -Hide of my hide.
