Some journeys are best retraced slowly, one place, one story, one footstep at a time.
At our recent Baithak, Trailing Gandhi’s Footsteps, Biba Sobti took us through the places and stories that shaped Mahatma Gandhi’s journey. It was less a lecture and more an afternoon spent walking beside him.
We were honoured to welcome Mr. A. Annamalai, Director, National Gandhi Museum, as our Guest of Honour.
Then the conversation turned into practice. Hands moved to the charkha, learning the slow, steady rhythm Gandhi made a symbol of self-reliance, and the afternoon closed over high tea and more conversation.

On Gandhi Jayanti, we reflect on the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, his unwavering belief in truth, non-violence, simplicity, and the power of individual action.

His words, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” continue to remind us that meaningful change begins within us.

Old Delhi wakes up before the rest of the city, and it wakes up hungry. Jalebis curling into hot ghee, bedmi puri puffing up in iron karahis, Nagauri halwa that sells out before most of Delhi has had its chai.

“Before the voice note there was the cylinder: you wound the crank and a voice came out of a trumpet.”
This is the Edison phonograph on slide 1. Sound was recorded on a wax cylinder, you turned a hand crank to play it, and the voice came out of that red-and-black horn (the “trumpet”).
“Then came the dial, where every number took a full turn of the finger and a moment of patience.”
This is the staircase of rotary phones on slide 2. To call someone, you put your finger in the hole for each digit and turned the dial all the way round, then waited for it to spin back. Dialling one number took time, which is the “moment of patience.”

Rheumatoid Arthritis can be more than joint pain and stiffness. For many people, the condition is also accompanied by persistent fatigue and a feeling of exhaustion.

A 2020 randomized, double-blind clinical trial explored the potential of Wisconsin Ginseng (Panax quinquefolius), also known as American Ginseng, in people with well-controlled rheumatoid
arthritis who experienced fatigue. The study included 17 participants and compared placebo with different doses of ginseng over 8 weeks. The group receiving 6,000 mg/day showed a significant difference in efficacy compared with the placebo group. While these findings are interesting, the study was small and does not establish ginseng as a treatment or cure for rheumatoid arthritis.
More research is needed to understand its potential role in managing RA-associated fatigue.
One more area where ginseng research is beginning to ask interesting questions.
