We believe firmly that one of the highest virtues of an intensely lived life is the clear recognition that we have a body. Our dear Residents, this Sunday we announce our transitory 'Red House Extension' in CR Park. For the inaugural event in the new space, we bring you something we have pioneered in Delhi, to much enthusiastic response over the years - a proper figure-drawing workshop.

No matter your experience or inexperience in drawing, over three hours through instructive, yet convivial, comfortable and informal attempts at this rather daunting subject - the bare naked human form, you will begin to learn to see it more closely perhaps than ever before. What's more, you will likely begin to understand the lyrical, sensual quality of the line, and the very sculptural possibilities of all of material life itself.

The session will be conducted by Arjun Shivaji Jain - director of Red House and a graduate of Central Saint Martins of the University of the Arts London. Our model Ria is a beverage consultant also interested in writing and painting, who having spent years feeling conscious of her body, will now be approaching figure-modelling as a way of experiencing it as simply that - a body. And the overall inspiration of the session will be drawn from the voluptuous line drawings of Gaston Lachaise, whom we will set to appropriate-to-the-event Beat Generation jazz.

We will be providing all necessary material, of course, as always, but attendees are free to bring their own paper and drawing material as well (preferred media would be graphite, charcoal, and ink). Again, no prior experience is required.

This is it, guys. Our final workshop in Okhla. And we'll make an event of it. This Sunday, let us paint ourselves (and each other) in thick, buttery impasto - as a family - of naughty girls and boys who refuse to behave appropriately even on their own funeral. In the style of Van Gogh and the spirit of Picasso, you will NOT want to miss this one.

24 artists wielding palette-knives, a monumental total painting surface, and top-of-the-line Winsor and Newton oil paints for am******on — to produce, in typical Red House fashion, what we know already will become an absolute masterpiece — violent, sensual, intense, sacrificial almost, adorned with the best of Red House's posters in the altar-hall, you will be part of and take back a beautifully handmade memorial of the Red House family.

HEAVE, HO! The morning after, we must, of course, sing some SEA SHANTIES! Whatever your musical ability, and whatever your confidence in your vocal skills, come this Sunday for something we know you've always wanted to do! Pretend that you're a sailor (pirate?) and sing your hearts out with your mateys!

On a more 'serious' note, the tradition of sea shanties is, of course, centuries old, carried forward by countless sailors at sea, pulling heavy oars, hauling thick ropes, all the while singing these work-a-day-songs in times of need for vigour and amusement, guided by nothing but rhythmic chanting and bodily motion.

Your 'captain' this Sunday will be Anchal Sethi. With over 3 years of A Capella experience, she will guide you through the powerful movements of the sea shanty. Within a tight-knit group, she will get you warmed-up first, proceed then with various improvisational techniques, and oh, a little talk on the historical background of sea shanties as well. The session will lead up to learning one solid shanty as a group, and culminate in an improvised performance of the whole thing.

And thenceforth, if you find yourself pretending you're a sailor, you'll have the songs to go along.

Here it is, the last concert in the Red House hall. Pull out your fishnets, smudge your lipstick, and wear your hair questionably. This Sunday, performed as an ode to the Red House by the wonderful 'The Ode Project', we go back to the time of Joy Division, Depeche Mode, The Cure, and The Smiths — and celebrate together what's yet to come.

Over the years, we've been Punk as hell, having no fears at all, and explicitly challenging boredom and pretension. We've conducted events so completely out of the ordinary, we've had all kinds of people batting eyelids as to how we operate. And indeed, we've set off more than one entire livelihoods along the way (we are not kidding). Though we must look onward as the era ends to a close, we wish to celebrate a moment in time in the cultural history of the capital.

As for The Ode Project — Anchal on vocals and keys, Nikhil on Drums, Omkar on Guitar, and Saniya on bass — the band was founded seemingly purpose-built for the concert. To celebrate and pay homage to the greatest musicians of our time and all across the world. The Project has aimed at consistently exploring and 'camouflaging into' unique genres and landscapes of music, putting heart and soul into each memorable experience.

Guys, as you must have discovered of course, every event of ours now has become part of a countdown. This Sunday, for the first and alas final time, we will be conducting a full-blown, properly GUIDED TOUR of our beloved Red House.

As many of you must have seen and heard before, the Red House building in Okhla was an absolute labour of love, taking an entire decade to sculpt into existence. The 'architect', if you may call him that, as well as the director of the Red House, Arjun Shivaji Jain, believe it or not, began building it in 2016 with his own two hands. He was no formal architect (and it is better that he wasn't; he had studied nuclear physics, and then moved on to painting, to leave painting as well in due course), but it was to be the perfect marriage between Art and Science. It was to be built like the Gothic cathedrals of old, but by one individual man.

The arches, the pillars, the lattices, the terracotta and glass roofs, and the garden-courtyard-amphitheatre with its hundreds of plants and trees, were all a dream realised with blood and sweat. The Red House building is perhaps the most genuinely literary in all the capital (at least). The brick floors, the woodwork experiments, the stepping stones on which God knows how many thousands of fellow Residents have hopped upon so far - it was a living experiment, paying homage to figures across the centuries, that is now at the end of its life.

This Sunday late morning, we would like to lay bare everything we know and have learnt about the noble art of architecture. If you have a home, and the wish to live in it well, this ought to be of interest to you.

Residents, for one of the last times in our beautifully lush amphitheatre before it's gone, we invite you this Sunday morning for an event which was an absolute hit the first time we did it. Wildly experimental, as you can expect from us.

Come join us for the Monsoon Edition of our very popular BRUNCH - PAKORA PARTY - of some of the many 'edible trees and commons of Delhi' in the rains! Think punarnava ke patte ke pakore with karinde ki chatni — with none other than CHANDAN TIWARY, joining us for a third time now, and author of perhaps still the most popular and definitive page on the Trees of Delhi Greens of Delhi.

We'll be eating many an 'exotic' pakora and chutney, with tea, but also talking about the tree-life of Delhi, and its progression through the seasons, and also the scope and possibility of foraging and eating parts of it. And if you attended our brunch with Chandan last, you would know how truly enjoyable it's going to be. Come with empty stomachs!

As for Chandan Tiwary, he has been living in Delhi for more than twenty years now, and working as an in-house legal counsel. Exploring Delhi is not only close to his heart, but also his favourite pastime. His interest in the trees of Delhi has taken us to very many green patches in and around Delhi, and the journey continues.

Our dear friends and Residents, a very big, albeit sad, piece of news we must share with you.

Our premises in Okhla is being sold. The property on which once there was a flourishing factory, and which we transformed after the passing of our father into a veritable Gothic cathedral, full with a wild Romantic courtyard, has come to the end of its life. All practicalities considered, we will have access to the space until the 31st of October.

We want to take this opportunity to invite all for whom the Red House has meant something in their life, to come to our events in Okhla perhaps one last time — and while the venue is still there to hire (until mid-September), to stay in the AirBnB or employ the Red House for their own artistic events (LINKS IN BIO).

DO, OF COURSE, NOTE that the 'Red House' will still very much be there after October — only not in its beloved Okhla building anymore. Stay tuned.

LIAR, LIAR, PANTS ON FIRE!

We're living in very uncertain times. As the old adage goes, we must, of course, play best the hand we are dealt, because that is all we can do.

From a personal point of view, what we believe we should strive to be able to do - is remain sufficiently calm under extraordinary pressure, think and act as clearly as possible, and, of course, when push comes to shove, be able to take decisions even under great uncertainty.

Historically, poker, as compared to chess, has been that game where it is not skill alone, but skill under uncertainty, that is tested. There are lessons hidden not only of the most practical kinds - of probability and psychology - but also the most ‘socially’ practicable kinds - of reading one’s neighbours’ hands much more astutely than one’s own.

Starting August 21st, for four Fridays late evening, we intend to meet for some rounds of poker and discussion. There will be no money involved, and all of us would be complete beginners. We know how intimidating these spaces can be - but they need not be - and there is much to be learnt, about our own selves also, through the playing of such a game.

The facilitator of the group, as ‘beginner’ as yourselves in poker, has formally studied at both the IIT Roorkee and Central Saint Martins in London. He will also be learning alongside you. Otherwise, he has long been an admirer of Sherlock Holmes, and recently Charlie Munger. He considers a polymathic mind to be the only kind that can solve today’s problems.
