CHICKENS is a play about the relationship between human and non-human animals, especially with those non-humans we farm for food. It's a series of imaginative leaps - dramatic, comedic, musical and absurd - asking one essential question: what does it mean for us to live lives that are entangled with the lives of others, for better and worse?

CHICKENS is a play looking closer at the relationship between human and non-human animals, specifically with - but not limited to - the chicken. It's a series of imaginative leaps - dramatic, comedic, musical and absurd - asking one essential question: what does it mean for us to live lives that are entangled with the lives of others, for better and worse?

It’s an ongoing attempt to satisfy our curiosity about the lives of non-humans around us: about the ways in which we consume them; the ways in which they’ve evolved with us; the ways in which they are familiar and strange; and how we relate to each other through rituals of love, sacrifice, murder, and play. It revisits the shaky lines drawn between captive and pet, wild and free, family and foreigner - between human and not-human-enough.

“Nature is energy and struggle. It is what exists without any promise. If it can be thought of by man as an arena, a setting, it has to be thought of as one which lends itself as much to evil as to good. Its energy is fearsomely indifferent.” - John Berger
