The ongoing protests at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, have reached a critical stage. What began as a movement led by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)—demanding transparency in national examinations like NEET and structural reforms in the education system—has now become a flashpoint for a larger debate on the right to protest.

The Trigger: Removal of Sonam Wangchuk

On July 21, 2026, Delhi Police executed an operation to remove Sonam Wangchuk from the Jantar Mantar protest site after he completed 20 days of an indefinite hunger strike. Officials stated the action was taken in strict compliance with Delhi High Court directions to ensure the activist received necessary medical intervention due to his deteriorating health.

Contesting Narratives

The Administrative View: Delhi Police maintains the operation was conducted with “maximum restraint” to protect the life of the citizen, as advised by medical experts, and to manage the law-and-order situation ahead of the proposed Parliament march.

The Protesters’ View: CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and other supporters have alleged that police used excessive force, claimed that Wangchuk was removed against his will, and described the operation as a “crackdown” on a peaceful movement. They argue that the removal is an attempt to silence the protest before it can gain further momentum.

The Path Forward

Despite the hospitalisation of their leader, the movement has vowed to continue. With calls for a “Chalo Sansad” (March to Parliament) gaining ground, the city remains under high security. The protesters continue to demand the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and a permanent solution to examination irregularities that have affected millions of aspirants nationwide.
