पलामू का प्रशासनिक मुख्यालय डाल्टनगंज (मेदिनीनगर) है , जो कोयल नदी के किनारे 24º3′ उत्तर और 84º4′ पूर्व अक्षांश के बीच स्थित है। डाल्टनगंज का नाम 1861 में छोटानागपुर के आयुक्त कर्नल डाल्टन के नाम पर रखा गया था। अब डाल्टनगंज का नया नाम राजा मेदिनी राय के नाम पर मेदिनीनगर है।

झारखंड के पलामू (डाल्टनगंज) क्षेत्र में स्थित कमलदह झील एक ऐतिहासिक और प्राकृतिक रूप से बेहद खूबसूरत पर्यटन स्थल है। यह झील अपने सदाबहार पानी, सफेद कमल के फूलों और बदलते मौसम में आने वाले विदेशी पक्षियों के लिए काफी प्रसिद्ध है।

ऐतिहासिक पृष्ठभूमिराजा-रानियों का स्नान: किवदंतियों और स्थानीय इतिहास के अनुसार, इस झील का गहरा संबंध चेरो वंश के पलामू के राजा मेदिनी राय और उनके परिवार से है। माना जाता है कि उस प्राचीन काल में राज परिवार की रानियां स्नान करने के लिए इसी झील में आती थीं।

राजा मेदिनी राय का लगाव: पलामू के ऐतिहासिक किले से लगभग 4 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित होने के कारण राजा मेदिनी राय इस स्थान और इसके प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य से बेहद लगाव रखते थे।
