What you will learn:
Part 1: Cardio exercises + Conditioning (this involves a flow of stretches) Gaga technique- through this, the dancer will be able to explore the range of movement their bodies are capable outside the construct of a particular dance style.

Part 2. Ballet basics like basic positions & lines - these will help understand contemporary dance aesthetic, but the techniques will also go with Bharatanatyam.

Part 3. Musicality - something we don't play with too much in Bharatanatyam. Dancers generally perform choreographies in different Kala pramanams & according to the percussion but seldom use the quality & tone of the music to inspire movement. This part will help dancers move with the quality of the music, look for rhythms & musical cues within a song.

Part 4. Theory based discussion- with the primary focus being on angika & sathvika and a brief of Laban movement analysis. Exercises based on the vocab & theory.

Part 5. Laban movement - Work through bars of choreography & render it with different qualities of movement. ************************
Shreya, a lawyer & dancer, has been training in Bharatanatyam for the last 15 years (under the tutelage of Guru. Vidushi Mrudula Rai) & is BFA Bharatanatyam graduate from SASTRA University.
She has taken training in Mohiniattam, Kuchipudi, Odissi & other Indian folk styles.

EKTHA - where dancers unite!

"EKTHA" ... where dancers unite! 🙂 Ektha means Oneness or Unity. All of us at Team Ektha learn under different Gurus & we have different styles of dancing, but what makes us one is our mutual love for Bharathanatyam and other Indian dance forms. So basically, through Ektha, you can see a bunch of passionate young dancers who come together to share ideas & come up with dances just because we love dancing! We still continue to learn from our respective Gurus & will never stop - coz we are nothing without them! 🙂 This is only a way to meet like-minded people & share the love for dance.

If you're thinking how suddenly - here's how it started. While I was at the University of Southampton, thanks to SKBD & India society, I got the chance to meet dancers whose exposure to dance was different from each other & also got to perform with them. Every time we came up with a choreography, it was a different experience. New ideas & new thoughts... I learnt so much from everyone I worked with! So I thought why not do something similar here... and that's how Team Ektha came together!

Lots of gratitude to everyone who has contributed towards this journey and helped make this possible (my family, Guru, friends and dancers!) Looking forward to make a lot more of you dancers a part of this story :)

If any of you would like to share ideas and our love for Bharathanatyam or any other Indian dance form (folk/classical), email us at [email protected] and we will get in touch with you!
