With tragic events such as the shooting at multiple mosques in New Zealand which led to the death of 50 innocent civilians, the conversation on gun reform is one that needs be had now more than ever. With reforms such as the New Zealand government banning the use semi-automatic rifle, the political world stage has had mixed reactions calling for a “Common Ground”. The decade old question if “guns save lives or cause innocent deaths” has been one that has not been answered with history and facts suggesting the latter. The common ground is open for conversations to be had between lawmakers and the people.

The time for change is now, do you believe that gun ownership save lives or do they cause innocent deaths?

Failure. To some, it could be a bend on the road, but to some, it could mean the end of their lives. Indian societies have always placed a huge burden on their expectations with regards to their children's education, on them. Bound by parental love and in some cases, guilt, kids tend to push themselves to the extent where their mental health takes a toll, to get good marks. And this increases multifold with the advent of the Board Exams.

This one is for all the students.

Tell us what you think about the unrealistic expectations your parents set for you and how you deal with it.

Spare the rod, spoil the child - might be a age old saying but its weight doesn't measure in today's world.

Based on the overwhelming accumulation of research conducted over the past 50+ years linking spanking to a number of risk factors, the professional consensus against this practice has grown to world-wide proportions. But schools and parents still resort to hitting kids to instill discipline in them.

In 1979, Sweden became the first country in the world to explicitly ban corporal punishment of children and a lot of other countries have followed suit. As we further our level of social intellect as a society, we must integrate the idea that any degree of physical punishment used against children is socially unacceptable.

In 2017, a 400-year-old tradition was smashed to smithereens when the widows of Varanasi dared to step out and paint the town in colours that had always been forbidden to them. These perpetual mourners showed the courage to step outside the circle of banishment and confront age-old conventions eye-to-eye.
Cheers to such bold women who drive the hope for a better, improved perception of traditions and the rituals that come with it.

1 in 4 people will experience a mental illness. Yet there is still something taboo about saying 'I'm feeling anxious today.' Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental disorders. Anxiety disorders and normal feelings of anxiousness are two different things. When feelings of fear or nervousness become excessive, difficult to control or interfere with daily life, an anxiety disorder may be present. In this society, our approach to mental illness (and more importantly wellness) is still quite primitive. Learning about the specifics of a disorder and helping family and friends understand better are helpful first steps we can take towards breaking the taboo of mental health.

Many people find them unpleasant to talk about, but STDs are an important part of public health. They’ve been around since records began, and are one of the most common experiences that sexually active people go through, yet society considers it an unsuitable topic for conversation. Rather than keep people in the dark, feeling ashamed, it’s time to bring STDs into the light – they’re highly preventable, highly treatable and practically normal, so talking about them should be, too.

Global statistics show that 1 in every 6 couples suffers from infertility. Even with the several options that a couple can look forward to in case of infertility, it is still dealt as a taboo. The entire procedure of getting treated is also reduced to a hushed affair so that nobody in the friends’ or the family’s’ circle comes to know about it. Infertility could come out of the shadows, just liked breast cancer did in the 1970s, through the might of our personal stories. We, too, can kick to the curb the taboo surrounding infertility by the act of talking about it. It’s up to us to make it alright. It’s up to us to talk, cry, and laugh about it with others. It’s up to us to treat it as the common and complicated part of the human experience that it very much is.

We often talk about what goes into making a marriage work, but we don't focus on what happens when it ends. Surrounded by falsehood and secrecy, talking about divorce, to this day, is complicated and seen as taboo. When in reality the answer can be pretty straightforward.

The societal stigma of being a divorcee can have a negative impact the seeps deep into one’s personal life. From family to work, divorcees are either looked upon with unnecessary sympathy or judgemental apprehensions.

Despite an all-time high in trans-visibility with celebrities such as Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox on major social media platforms, violence against the LGBTQ community has been at an all-time high.

Trans people are often rejected by family, turned away from jobs, and denied admission to schools or even places of worship. From being treated as a mental illness to being subject to imprisonment, and even the death penalty in certain countries, trans people are prone to violence for simply being themselves.

Where does the mix of misogyny, transphobia and racism stem from?

Perhaps, it’s time we ask ourselves.

There’s always a first time! Maybe your “First Time” was when you were a kid. But, what if your “First Time” happened after turning 50? Did you fall in love for the first time later in life? Did you find “The One” in your sixth, seventh, eighth or ninth decade of life. Yet the construct of marriage is built around spending the rest of your life with “ The one”. Procreate with the “The one”, do your taxes with “ The one” and inevitably death. We age restrict ourselves to the timeline life and breaking away from it is considered taboo. Finding love at 16 or finding love at 50 is love. Disregarding how someone feels irrespective of their age is dehumanizing them. Is it really selfish to think that love can be conditional and one day you might choose to love somebody else?
