#22 OF 22 – Thiru Kai Kunnu Mahadeva temple temple?
The magnificent Mahadeva Temple in Tiru Kai Kunnu is near Kannur, Kerala. Thalaserri is the closest place to stay. Dating from the 11th century, exemplifies medieval temple architecture with its impressive 9-foot elevated plinth.

The Mukhamandapa leading to the double-storied dvi tala sanctum. Spread across 2.5 acres, this temple's exquisite woodcarvings display diverse mythological narratives, while its painted motifs reveal fascinating historical textile connections—patola weaves from Gujarat that travelled across the subcontinent. The laterite structure remains wonderfully preserved, avoiding cement modernization. The Namaskara Mandapa features turned wooden pillars and intricately carved and painted ceiling panels. A nearby 13-acre temple tank (Chirra) completes this cultural treasure administered by the Kottayam Rajas.

The deity within the wooden bars is Porkali Bhagavathi – a harmonius blend of the older mother goddess tradition and the later Sanskritic tradition that is so special in Kerala. There is also a temple for Vishnu.

Plan to spend an hour here, I found a spot behind the main sanctum and spent almost an hour admiring the proportions of the chutrambalam and the vimana as well as the evening light dancing on the laterite stone!

GOD'S OWN STORY: KERALA THROUGH TIME REEL #21 OF 22 -
Vakamoli Vara Swamy Temple

Near Calicut lies the Vakamoli Varaha Swamy Temple, an exemplar of Kerala's introspective architectural tradition. This temple embodies the philosophical principle of Nivrithy (inward contemplation) through its deliberate simplicity and minimal ornamentation.
Dating stylistically to the 10-11th centuries, this laterite structure represents an increasingly rare, untouched sacred space in Kerala's religious landscape. The harmonious integration of laterite and wood follows regional architectural vernacular.
The walls have later 16th century paintings and a rare copper percussion musical instrument called a Mizhavu. Vital to temple dances especially the Koodiyattam, one form of the Mizhavu was the panchamukha vadyam. This instrument was once part of the villu paattu music in Tamil Nadu as well.
The presiding deity, though associated with Varaha (boar incarnation of Vishnu), is paradoxically represented in human form. The temple complex includes a modest Namaskara Mantapam, an adjacent Ekathala or single tiered vimana.
Close by was a Shiva temple as well and beyond a large temple pond. Since the revenue of the temple is meager, there is no literature on the temple. Sadly the mukha mandapa has recently been renovated with a new Kirti mukha. I hope you can visit the temple before it is fully renovated!
