Releasing today: The Sailor's Farewell

An unusual and poetic visual narrative of resistance against tyranny from Brazil.

Hi everyone, I’m Flávia Bomfim, an author  of picturebooks, and illustrator, and I’m here to share some news.

“The Sailor’s Farewell,” a book published by Editora Pallas in Brazil in 2022, has just been released in English by Tara Books. Tara Books is an Indian publishing house well known to many of you for producing impactful books, many of them printed in silkscreen, highlighting the graphic strength and worldview of different Indian territories.

Here is our newly reimagined version of “The Sailor’s Farewell,” which tells the story of a revolt in Brazil that took place in 1910 — the Revolt of the Lash — from the perspective of one of its main figures and leaders, João Cândido. One of the legacies of this revolt was a series of embroideries.

The idea is to invite João to tell and retell this story with me through embroidery. This book is based on research into photographic archives from newspapers of the time, questioning how history was narrated. Many of those accounts were used to manipulate public opinion, which ended up silencing and diminishing the strength of the revolt.

The embroidery over these images introduces another dimension, one that pierces the factual — a dimension that retells, reinterprets, and looks at what happened from other perspectives. The front and the back of the embroidery, what is visible and what is hidden, become surfaces and layers of this narrative.

Here is this new book for you — I hope you enjoy it. I’m very happy. And that’s it, everyone: the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian Ocean are now connected through Tara Books.
