A gesture can establish a character, shape a landscape, trace the curve of a memory or reveal what is left unspoken. Yet its meaning is never fixed in isolation. The same hasta shifts according to context, rhythm, gaze, facial expression and the dancer’s inner intention. It is through this delicate interplay that codified movement becomes communication.

Porut Kurippu: Abstraction in Tradition with Mythili Prakash examines how classical dance can evoke meaning beyond the literal. Through this rich terrain of porut kurippu—the indication or evocation of meaning—Mythili Prakash will reflect on the relationship between tradition, imagination and contemporary artistic expression.
