We are streamlining our FB and IG accounts. Follow us on Facebook over at Activated Adventures.

After 33 years of bringing theatre to students in every nook and cranny of America we are officially closing down Act!vated Story Theatre. But as one curtain finally falls, another one rises on an exciting scene.

We spent the last 15 months traveling the world as volunteer English teachers. We have decided to sell/donate everything that won't fit in our backpacks and head back to Southeast Asia and beyond at the end of August. And to continue sharing our expertise in underserved communities around the world as long as we can.

Thank you for being with us here. And we hope you'll stay with us. We hope to see you "out there".

Elephants are one of the most intelligent and social animals in the world. They are known for their strong bond with their family and herd, and their ability to communicate with each other through a variety of vocalizations and body language. Elephants are also known for their remarkable memory and ability to recognize other elephants, even after many years of separation.

One of the most fascinating things about elephants is their trunk, which is an incredibly versatile and sensitive organ. Elephants use their trunks for a variety of tasks, such as grasping food, drinking, and communicating with others. They also use their trunks to show emotions such as joy, anger, and sadness.

Elephants are also known for their gentle and caring nature, often showing empathy and helping other members of their herd. This behavior has been observed in elephants of all ages and sexes, and it is thought to be a result of their strong social bonds.

Sadly, elephants are facing the threat of extinction due to habitat loss and poaching for their ivory tusks. It is important to raise awareness about the importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats.

When we were in India we had the opportunity to visit the Konni Elephant Reserve in Kerala, India. Even though the reserve is small, with only a few elephants kept in pens and chains, it was an amazing experience to see these majestic creatures up close. However, we couldn't help but wish that we could have seen them in their natural habitat instead.

If you are interested in learning more about the elephants we got to meet stop by out Activated Adventures travel blog.

During morning circle time at the school, we were able to lead the kids in songs and other activities. We taught them such American favorites as "Old McDonald", "If You're Happy and You Know It", and "Bingo". (Shhh!! Don't tell them they were learning a few things in the process.)

Our time supervising the students at the school in Chengannur was an opportunity not only to encourage them to be creative, but also to help them learn to share and be courteous. One thing we did was offer them a chance to write and draw on a marker board, which doubled as practice in cooperation and taking turns. One of the most effective exercises, and one they really enjoyed, was to simply have them sit in a circle and pass an object around, saying "please" and "thank you".

Samples of our teaching schedule in Chengannur, India. We didn't get the schedule until the night before, and sometimes we'd find out as we were walking into class that we'd have to fill in for the teacher in science, social studies, Hindi or Malaylim (one of India's many languages). They kept us on our toes.

We had small classrooms with limited resources in Chengannur -- almost no books except for workbooks, no computers, nothing fancy. Just some dedicated teachers.

Gathering in a circle. It's a universal practice, across different time periods and time zones. Human beings love to assemble in the formation of nature's most perfect shape, an arrangement in which (as King Arthur noted when he ordered his table) nobody is ahead of anyone else in line. A great way to gather kids together at the start of the school day.

The turquoise water was most inviting, and made us wish we’d brought along our swimwear. But hey, being theatre pros we know how to improvise. So we just emptied our pockets and jumped in fully clothed. And the water felt every bit as refreshing as it looked – it was just the perfect temperature.

Pro tip if you find yourself in Abu Dhabi wanting to escape the relentless sun: after 10 or 15 minutes, the lifeguard came over and informed us that it was against regulations to swim there in clothing – we’d need to put on beach attire. Thus, we had to get out... More on our latest Activated Adventures blog.
