Meet the eyes that captured Gandhi's trails from 1946-1948.
Growing up in a left-oriented environment where social consciousness shaped his worldview, Sudeesh Yezhuvath, the photographer behind "You I Could Not Save, Walk with Me" is a key force driving the project. Bridging the gap between past and present, he tries to ensure that historical narratives reach and resonate with new generations while revealing how the membrane between outside and inside has always been thin.

This is an invitation to walk alongside Gandhiji’s ideals and carry forward his message of harmony in today’s world. A deeper understanding into Mahatma Gandhi's legacy.We officially announce the forthcoming exhibition, 'You I could not save, Walk with me', slated to begin on January 30, 2025, from 5:17, at the Durbar Hall Art Gallery, Ernakulam.Curated by the Chairperson of Kerala Lalithakala Akademi, Murali Cheeroth and Human Geographer, Dr. Jayaraj Sundaresan, this show, through an innovative juxtaposition of photographic works by Sudeesh Yezhuvath and poetic compositions by P N Gopikrishnan, reflects Gandhiji's commitment to nonviolence and his efforts to build a harmonious society.

1946 മുതൽ 1948 വരെയുള്ള ഗാന്ധിജിയുടെ ചരിത്രം അതർഹിക്കുന്ന രീതിയിൽ ചർച്ച ചെയ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടില്ല. അതിലേയ്ക്ക് തിരിഞ്ഞുനോക്കുമ്പോൾ നിരവധി ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ നമുക്ക് മുന്നിൽ ഉയർന്നു വരുന്നു. സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യപ്രാപ്തിക്ക് ശേഷം ഗാന്ധിജി നടത്തിയ രണ്ട് നിരാഹാരസമരങ്ങൾ ആർക്ക് വേണ്ടിയായിരുന്നു? ആർക്കെതിരെ ആയിരുന്നു? നവഖലിയിലും ബീഹാറിലും കൽക്കട്ടയിലും ഡെൽഹിയിലും ഗാന്ധി പരിശ്രമിച്ച ദൗത്യങ്ങൾ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യസമരത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണോ? എന്തുകൊണ്ട് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിന്റെ ചൂട് കെടുംമുമ്പേ ഒരു ഇന്ത്യാക്കാരൻ ഗാന്ധിജിയെ കൊന്നു?

ഈ ചോദ്യങ്ങളിലേക്ക് ചരിത്രകാരനും കവിയുമായ പി എൻ ഗോപീകൃഷ്ണനും ഫോട്ടോഗ്രാഫർ സുധീഷ് എഴുവത്തും നടത്തിയ അന്വേഷണത്തെ ഒരു പ്രദർശനമായി അവതരിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ് ക്യൂറേറ്റർമാരായ വിഖ്യാത ചിത്രകാരനായ മുരളി ചീരോത്തും ഹ്യൂമൻ ജിയോഗ്രാഫർ ആയ ഡോ. ജയരാജ് സുന്ദരേശനും. നവഖലിയിലും ബീഹാറിലും കൽക്കട്ടയിലും ഡൽഹിയിലും തന്റെ അവസാന ദശയിൽ ഗാന്ധി നടത്തിയ യാത്രകളെ അനുധാവനം ചെയ്താണ് ഈ പ്രദർശനം മേൽപ്പറഞ്ഞ ചോദ്യങ്ങളെ അഭിമുഖീകരിക്കാൻ ശ്രമിച്ചത്. മതേതരത്വം എന്ന ആശയം ഇന്ത്യൻ ബഹുസ്വര സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നിർമ്മിതിയിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ട ഘടകമായിരുന്നെന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കുകയും അതിന്റെ അടിസ്ഥാനത്തിൽ ഇന്ത്യൻ സമൂഹത്തെ പുതുക്കിപ്പണിയാനുള്ള ശ്രമമായിരുന്നു ആ യാത്രയെന്നും ഉള്ള തിരിച്ചറിവാണ് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷമുള്ള ആ അനുധാവനത്തിലൂടെ വെളിപ്പെട്ടത്. 1947 ലെ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യലബ്ധി ഒരു കർട്ടൻ റൈസർ മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യൻ റിപ്പബ്ളിക്ക് ഉണ്ടാകുന്നത് ഗാന്ധി എന്ന തയ്യൽക്കാരൻ കീറിയ ഇന്ത്യയെ തുന്നിച്ചേർക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ മാത്രമായിരുന്നു. മതത്തിന്റെ പേരിൽ പിടഞ്ഞു വീണ മനുഷ്യർക്കിടയിലൂടെ ഗാന്ധി അഹിംസയ്ക്ക് പുതിയൊരർത്ഥം കണ്ടെടുക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. ഇന്ത്യൻ സമൂഹത്തെ ലോകമാനുഷികതയുമായി ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അതിന് ഗാന്ധി കൊടുത്ത വില സ്വജീവിതം തന്നെയായിരുന്നു .

ക്യാമറാധിഷ്ഠിത കലയും പ്രതിഷ്ഠാപന കലയും ഉപയോഗിച്ച് തയ്യാറാക്കിയ ഈ പ്രദർശനം ഇന്നത്തെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ പരിസ്ഥിതിയിൽ "കല ഒരു ചെറുത്തുനില്പാണ്" എന്നതിനെ കുറേക്കൂടി ഉറപ്പിക്കുന്നു. 2025 ജനുവരി 30 മുതൽ ഫെബ്രുവരി 18 എറണാകുളത്തുള്ള ദർബാർ ഹാൾ ഗ്യാലറിയിൽ "You I could not save, Walk with me" എന്ന പേരിലാണ് ഈ പ്രദർശനം നടത്തുന്നത്.

ഈ പ്രദർശനം ഏറേ കാലിക പ്രാധാന്യമുള്ളതാണ് എന്ന് ഞാൻ കരുതുന്നു, അത് കൊണ്ട് തന്നെ കഴിയുന്ന എല്ലാവരും പ്രദർശനം കാണാൻ ദർബാർ ഹാളിൽ എത്തുമല്ലോ.

Understanding Gandhiji’s life from 1946 till his assassination in 1948 is profoundly important for the future of India and the world. Satyagraha was one of the powerful instruments Gandhiji used against the British Colonialists. However, why did Gandhiji go on two indefinite fasts after India became independent? What cause was it for and what was it against? Were Gandhiji’s missions in Noakhali, Bihar and Delhi part of India’s freedom struggle? Why did an Indian assassinate him even before the festivities at the dawn of the freedom had ended?

When we look back at Gandhiji’s life from 1946 to 1948, we are faced with several such questions that have not been discussed much. In pursuit of answers to these questions, historian and poet PN Gopikrishnan and photographer Sudeesh Yezhuvath embark on a transformational journey following Gandhiji’s travels between 1946 and 1948. Their collaborative inquiry unfolds here as an exhibition, curated by the visionary painter Murali Cheeroth and Human Geographer Dr. Jayaraj Sundaresan.

This journey is a rethinking of history, with profound implications for understanding the current predicament in India. It is suggested here that Gandhiji’s mission during those years was an unparalleled effort to rebuild a nonviolent and secular fraternity that could become a pluralist country. Gaining of freedom in 1947 was just a curtain raiser. The Republic of India had to be shaped by knitting together a society torn apart by deep divisions instilled by the Colonial British as well as local communal forces.

During those years Gandhiji was deploying the immense possibilities of non-violence by walking among and talking to a people felled by the sword of religious, communal and divisive forces. Gandhiji was trying to build a Nation rooted in nonviolence. In 1948, Gandhiji was assassinated for his unwavering commitment to achieving peace through nonviolence.

This exhibition titled “You I could not save, Walk with me” showcases lens-based works, new media and installations born from this transformational journey. We invite you to the Durbar Hall Art Gallery at Ernakulam from 30 January to 18 February 2025.
