Magic on the Streets
Alpona is a folk art traditionally practiced by women, and consisting of colored motifs, patterns, and symbols that are painted on floors and walls with paints made from rice flour, on religious occasions. It is common to the Bengal region in India, and in Bangladesh. Amongst Hindu families, alpanas may contain religious motifs with symbolic designs that relate to religious austerity, festivals, and specific deities. Alpana motifs have been very influential in modern Indian art, and are incorporated into the works of artists such as Jamini Roy, Abanindranath Tagore, Devi Prasad, and in the early illustrations of film-maker Satyajit Ray. In contemporary days the craft has taken a new avatar. STEET ALPONA. In the year 2012 a 10km long alpona was drawn on the street of Dhaka by 1000 students to celebrate Poila Boishak. Ever since it has been a tradition in West Bengal and Bangladesh and huge comunity alpona are drawn during durga pujo and poila boishak .

Jharkhand has received the GI tag for the iconic Sohrai-Kohvar tribal art form, from the Geographical Indications Registry.
Mainly practiced by tribal women of remote villages in Barkagaon block in Hazaribag district, these traditional and ritualistic paintings, made with only naturally available soils of different colours in the area, adorn adivasi homes made of mud or brick.
A GI tag or the Geographical Identification tag is a symbol used on products that have a specific geographical location and possess qualities unique to that place of origin. With this status, no state or country can lay claim over the origin of he 5700 years old Sohrai-Kohvar art form. The recognition, a first for any product from the state, will help 360 tribals showcase this art form on national and international platforms and boost their income

The state of Jharkhand is part of the central tribal belt of India and home to more than 40 Adivasi communities. The habitations of these communities typically comprise mud houses located within paddy fields and forests. Driving along the highway and turning into one of the smaller roads, one is likely to find clusters of neatly plastered and painted mud houses with tribal art on the walls, flanking the street. In the months between October and January particularly, the houses are resplendent, having been freshly painted by the village women in preparation for the harvest festival.
The Oraon comb-cut is one such unusual wall painting technique which dates back to olden times. Cattle images, feeding of animals, birds, papyrus, circled lotus, geometric forms, arches in series are common. A layer of black or dark grey manganese-rich clay is first applied on the wall. Once it dries, a second layer of whitish kaolin clay is applied. When the second layer is just set but not fully dry, the designs are scraped onto the wall using a broken comb or a similar toothed instrument. This scratches off the kaolin clay to reveal the blackened surface below. The final designs comprise multiple delicate black lines on a whitened surface.
This creates a pattern that when viewed from afar, reveals an amazing black and white painting.

The tribal art Madhubani to save tree ...

In 2012, to prevent deforestation, Madhubani artists( women of nearby villages) created colourful Madhubani masterpieces on tree trunks. As a result, not even a single painted tree was cut.
As you drive along National Highway 52 in Madhubani district, you will pass more than 100 trees that have already been decorated with the paintings. It has attracted tourists ever since....
