From serving delicious paranthas to weary students to lighting bonfires in chilly evenings, Mausami Verma aka ‘Thakur Aunty’ can do it all. She’s originally from Dumehar, but doesn’t visit her family more often due to the work engagements.
Sadly, her husband passed away 2 years ago, which lead to her becoming the breadwinner of the family. Earlier, she rarely visited the dhaba, but after the tragedy, she mostly lives above her dhaba, with her 2 daughters, Mannat and Muskan, who’re being educated.
When asked what sells the most in her dhaba, she told us that nost students prefer paranthas and momos. She believes her main competetor in the dhaba market is ‘Sunny’s’.
Regarding her relation with her loyal customers, the students, she says that she is very close to the 4th year students. They treat her like their mother, and often touch her feet. On recalling some individuals, she tells us that she remembers Prachi, Aastha, Apoorva, who although, have graduated from college, but still ring her up sometimes. She feels really good when someone remembers her.
When questioned about how the college and surrounding areas have changed over the years, she says that it has benefited the locals but has also caused problems for them. People have gotten employement because of the college, since they have opened up shops and dhabas, but on the other hand, the locals are a bit frustrated as well. The locals being elders, and hence conservative in nature, are troubled by the relationships between boys and girls. The illicit activities happening in and around the college lead to a stressful work environment for them. Even though the emergence of this college has resulted in people wanting to send their children for higher studies and get good jobs, but at the same time, they feel a little paranoid and fearful that their children may get spoilt and fall into bad company and parttake in said illicit activities. (In our view. we think that every parent has similar thoughts towards their children.) But, in a nutshell, she feels really happy when students get placed in successful companies, and she wishes the same for her own children.
She is also concerned regarding the microclimate of this area. According to her, snowfall has become a sight for sore eyes. When she was younger, snowfall used to a recuring sight.
Fun fact : She owns 2 shops which she has rented out to some shopkeepers and also has a room for herself upstairs and runs the dhabha as well. In all we can say that we have a woman entrepreneur right here in JUIT.
