Remembering Eminent Hindustani Classical Vocalist Pandit Damodar Hota on his 4th Death Anniversary
(25 December 1935 – 6 February 2022)
Pandit Damodar Hota was a distinguished Indian classical vocalist, musicologist, composer, and guru from Odisha, India. He was a highly respected exponent of Hindustani Classical Music as well as Odissi Classical Music (Udra Paddhatiya Sangita).
Pandit Hota received his early musical training from his mother, Smt. Dandimani Devi, and his father, Sri Gopinath Hota, an accomplished practitioner of Odissi music and Mardala. He further enriched his foundation by learning from senior musicians associated with the Jaga-Akhadas of Puri and the Jagannath Temple tradition. He later pursued advanced training in Odissi music under Guru Nrusingha Nath Khuntia.
Pandit Damodar Hota was awarded a scholarship by the Odisha Sangeet Natak Academy to study Hindustani Classical Vocal Music at Banaras Hindu University from 1952 to 1958. He was a chief disciple of Padma Shri Pandit Balwant Rai Bhatt (Bhav Rang) and Pandit Omkarnath Thakur (Pranav Rang). His musical compositions bear the pen name “Swar Rang.”
Pandit Hota was a top-grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan of Odisha.
For his Doctor of Music (Sangeet Pravin) degree, he was awarded the Pandit Mirashi Buwa Puraskar. He also held Madhyama Purna in Tabla and Visharad in Pakhawaj. Pandit Hota performed extensively at many prestigious classical music conferences and festivals in India and abroad.
Pandit Hota served as Principal and Senior Faculty of Hindustani Vocal Music at Utkal Sangeet Mahavidyalaya. He was the founder and Chief Guru of Swar Rang, an institution dedicated to Hindustani Classical Music and Udra Paddhatiya Sangita. To support teaching and preservation, he authored numerous scholarly books that notate and critically discuss the practice, compositions, theory, and historical development of both musical traditions. Many of these works are prescribed as syllabus texts across Odisha.
From 2007 to 2016, Pandit Hota organized the annual Tridhara National Music Conference, aimed at promoting and disseminating knowledge of Udra Paddhatiya Sangita alongside the other two major forms of Indian Classical Music( Hindustani and Carnatic paddhati)
Pandit Hota’s legacy lies in his lifelong dedication to the dissemination of Hindustani Classical Music and Udra Paddhatiya Sangeet, through which he has inspired and trained generations of students in Odisha and abroad.
Pandit Damodar Hota passed away in Bhubaneswar on 6 February 2022, at the age of 86.

Pandit Hota’s lifelong pursuit provided Odissi classical music (Udra Paddhatiya Sangeet) with a strong scholarly foundation and inspired generations of performers and researchers. Following his passing in 2022, the Government of Odisha accorded him full state honors, recognizing his enduring role as a custodian of the region’s musical heritage.
