Rath Yatra has been observed for over a thousand years and is deeply rooted in Vaishnavite traditions. According to legend, Lord Jagannath expresses his desire to visit his birthplace — the Gundicha Temple, located around 3 km from the Jagannath Temple in Puri — once every year. This symbolic journey represents the Lord’s outreach to the common people, breaking away from the sanctum of the temple to mingle with his devotees on the streets.

This act is also seen as a reenactment of Krishna's visit to Vrindavan, symbolizing the divine longing and connection between the deity and his devotees.

It is the only time of the year when devotees can see and worship the deities outside the temple, as entry to the sanctum is usually restricted to Hindus.

The festival symbolizes unity, inclusivity, and devotional surrender.
