Odisha is a land of 13 festivals in 12 months. Raja is one of the most important festivals in Odisha

This is one of the most famous festivals in Odisha that pays tribute to the menstruation cycle. It is said that the Vasumati goddess got her mensuration during this time. It is believed that mother earth menstruates during these three days and a ceremonial bath takes place on the fourth day. This day is celebrated by girls wearing new clothes, taking swings, and hanging on the tree branches. Ploughing the fields does not take place and unmarried girls celebrate as it's their day of celebration.

ଅକ୍ଷୟ ତୃତୀୟା

Agrarian festival ‘Akshaya Tritiya’ is being celebrated across Odisha today with farmers performing ‘Akhi Muthi Anukula’, the ceremonial act of sowing seeds in their paddy fields after ploughing. The occasion marks the commencement of agricultural works.

As per rituals, farmers wearing new clothes carry a decorated basket of seeds to their fields where the seeds are offered to Goddess Lakshmi praying for a rich harvest season.

Pana Sankranti is a vibrant and colourful festival celebrated with great zeal in the eastern state of Odisha, India. The festival marks the beginning of the Odia new year and is observed on the first day of the month of Baisakha.

People across Odisha, especially in rural areas, celebrate this auspicious day by preparing and sharing a sweet drink called "Pana". The festivities also include the worship of Lord Jagannath, who is believed to have created the Pana drink. The festival is a time for renewal, new beginnings, and togetherness, and its vibrant celebrations truly embody the rich cultural heritage of Odisha.

Dol purnima ( ଦୋଳ ପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣିମା )
It is a Hindu festival of paramount importance in Odisha which marks the end of six-day swing festival of Radha and Lord Krishna.

The six-day festival known as Dola Jatra begins from the Falguna Dasami day. The idol of village deities, especially of Lord Krishna, is carried to all the homes in the villages on a decorated Veemana (palanquin). The people carrying the idols and those following it are semared with Abira (dry colours).

The procession is led by village drummers, pipers and the ‘Sankirtana Mandalis’ (a group of singers and musicians). The procession halts in front of each household and the deity is offered ‘Bhog’. On the final day of the Jatra, the celebration culminates in a swing-festival for the deities. The idols carried in Veemanas from a number of villages assemble in an important place (Melana Padia) where swings are fixed on a platform. They are made to swing to the accompaniment of devotional music sung in chorus.

As per ancient texts, one who gets a glimpse of Krisnha swaying in the swing is expiated of all sins.

Hon'ble CM unveiled the iconic Dakota (DC-3) Aircraft (VT-AUI) at the BPI Airport today.

Dakota is an incredible piece of history that will continue to inspire generations to come, A fitting tribute to one of the most iconic personalities of Odisha.

Jagara ( ଜାଗର )

The festival is principally celebrated by offerings of Bael or golden apple or Bilva/Vilvam leaves to Lord Shiva, all-day fasting, and an all-night-long vigil (jagarana).

In Odisha, people, both males and females, go fasting through the day until they see Maha Deepa (Sacred earthen lamp with flame) is raised atop Shiva temples in the night. From the evening, devotees sat lighting Deepa in front of the Shiva temples till the Maha Deep rises atop Dadhinauti. Serenity prevails in all households as family members keep praying the lord.
