What would happen if Earth suddenly stopped spinning?
Our planet rotates at about 1,670 km/h at the equator — and we don’t even feel it. But if that motion stopped instantly, everything on the surface would keep moving at massive speed. Cities would be destroyed, oceans would create mega-tsunamis, and winds stronger than any hurricane would sweep across the planet.
If Earth stopped rotating but still orbited the Sun, one side would face constant daylight for months — burning under extreme heat — while the other side would freeze in endless darkness.
Thankfully, according to NASA, this scenario is nearly impossible. Earth’s rotation is very stable and only slowing down gradually over billions of years.
