It is said that when Kempe Gowda built his new capital town around 1537, he called it Bengaluru as his mother and wife belonged to the hamlet of Halé Bengaluru (Old Bangalore). In 9th century records from the Ganga era, Bangalore is referred to as a small hamlet, the location of which coincides with the modern Hale Bengaluru near Kodigehalli ward (not far from Hebbal) in the Byatanarayanpura Assembly constituency . The Kodigehalli bus stop is marked by the Dodda Ganapa Devasthana (a Ganapathi Temple) and the area is also home to the IISc Layout and TATA Nagar.
