1Shanthiroad 1Shanthiroad is an artspace and art residency located in Shanthi Nagar, Bangalore. 1 Shanthi Road is 20 years old!

twenty vibrant years during which time we’ve broken new ground, nurtured new and old talent, and triggered meaningful engagements with visual art. We’ve hosted and shown artists from Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, with our partner Khoj in Delhi; we’ve had a show of Tibetan culture in exile; we run the Sethusamudram Project, an ongoing multi-year partnership between Indian and Sri Lankan artists; we’ve produced a beautiful book on GH Krumbiegel, the pioneer- ing German horticulturist responsible for much of Bangalore’s greenery; we run art workshops with rural and underprivileged children in Bangalore and Karnataka; we’ve presented monthly talks by prominent artists, historians and theorists that thousands have attended; we’ve screened odd and unusually lovely films, often followed by discussions with the filmmakers; and we’ve hosted and shown artists from every continent (and virtually every country) in the world.

We are excited to announce the Critical Praxis artists-in residence. Our curator, Vignesh has deliberated, and this is what he has to say:

"The selection process involved a close reading of all the artists’ portfolios, followed by an engagement with their visual language, material sensibilities, conceptual approaches and artistic processes and a bit of research on how currently their practice is moving. I then studied their Statements of Purpose to understand what each artist could bring into the residency in relation to the Critical Praxis framework and my evolving curatorial enquiry. The selection was a meticulous and challenging process, ultimately guided by the conceptual depth, relevance and potential of the three practices to enter into a meaningful dialogue with one another and the curatorial framework.

I was drawn to Rahee’s ability to approach land, geology, material and
history through deeply layered political and anthropological questions. Boris’s practice resonated with my interest in the "hidden structures that sustain
spaces and communities." I found in Jit’s practice an intimate understanding of "knowledge as something lived, embodied and transmitted," rather than merely preserved as an archive."

We look forward to hosting our new residents soon! .colin

We invite you to 'Interwoven Terrains: Dialogues on the shifting Landscape,' a show by Asif Imran and Subhankar Chakraborty at 1Shanthiroad. The show opens on 21 August 2026, at 6 pm, and will be on view till 23 August 2026.

Asif Imran is originally from the Lalgola, Murshidabad district of West Bengal and currently based in Bangalore. Imran holds both a BFA and MFA from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. His practice is deeply informed by his migration from remote rurality to dense urban centers. Imran’s work explores the dialogue between individuals and their environments, specifically focusing on the rapid expansion of urbanization and its impact on rural landscapes.

Subhankar Chakraborty is from Chittaranjan, near the West Bengal-Jharkhand border, and currently based in Bangalore. Chakraborty completed his BFA at Rabindra Bharati University and his MFA at Visva Bharati University, Shantiniketan. His oeuvre is a monumental exploration of the fluctuating relationship between humanity and the natural world. Chakraborty is known for his innovative methodology, where he reshapes the traditional rectangular paper format into undulating forms that mirror natural topographies.

'Interwoven Terrains: Dialogues on the Shifting Landscape' brings together the distinct yet complementary practices of Subhankar Chakraborty and Asif Imran to explore the multifaceted nature of the contemporary landscape. In an era defined by rapid urbanization and ecological precariousness, the exhibition serves as a visual discourse on how we perceive, inhabit, and transform our surroundings. While landscape has traditionally sought to "capture" a view, these two artists seek to "deconstruct" it.

AIPC | LGBTQIA+ & Sports Domains

History was made. Inclusion moved forward. 🌈🏅🇮🇳

For the first time, Indian LGBTQIA+ athletes proudly represented our nation at the International Gay Games 2026, returning home with remarkable achievements that have inspired our community and the country.

The All India Professionals’ Congress (AIPC) LGBTQIA+ Domain, in collaboration with the AIPC Sports Domain, was honoured to felicitate these trailblazing athletes in Bengaluru, recognising not just their medals, but their courage, resilience, and commitment to making sport a space where everyone belongs.

We were privileged to be joined by Ms. Sowmya Reddy, Former MLA and President of the Karnataka Pradesh Mahila Congress, and Mr. Arvind Narrain, lawyer, author, researcher, and LGBTQIA+ rights activist. Their reflections reinforced a powerful message: that the values of equality, liberty, fraternity, and dignity enshrined in our Constitution must extend to every playing field, every athlete, and every dream.

A special congratulations to Goaty for her phenomenal performance—winning 4 Gold medals and 3 Silver medals across multiple athletics events—and to Sumit Pawar for bringing home Gold in the Javelin Throw. Their achievements are a testament to the incredible talent within our community and a reminder of what becomes possible when opportunity meets determination.

This collaboration between the AIPC LGBTQIA+ Domain and the AIPC Sports Domain marks the beginning of a larger movement. Together, we are committed to fostering conversations, building partnerships, and advocating for policies that make sports safer, more inclusive, and more accessible for LGBTQIA+ persons across Karnataka and India.

At AIPC, we believe that representation matters—not only in politics and public life, but also on the track, the field, and every sporting arena. We remain committed to ensuring that every LGBTQIA+ athlete has the opportunity to participate, compete, and excel with dignity and pride.

This is more than a felicitation. It is the beginning of a movement towards an inclusive sporting future for India.

Celebrating Q***r Excellence 🌈🏅

History is being made.

For the first time, Indian LGBTQIA+ athletes represented our nation at the International Gay Games, returning home with remarkable achievements and reminding us that excellence knows no gender identity or sexual orientation.

This felicitation is more than a celebration of medals—it’s a celebration of courage, perseverance, visibility, and the countless barriers our athletes have overcome simply to stand on the world stage with pride.

The LGBTQIA+ community has always contributed immensely to our nation’s progress—in sports, arts, science, public service, business, law, healthcare, and every sphere of society. Today, we celebrate these trailblazers who have shown that when given equal opportunities, q***r Indians don’t just participate—we excel.

Join us as we honour our athletes, celebrate their historic achievements, and reaffirm our commitment to building an India where every person can dream, compete, and succeed with dignity.

📍 6 August | 4:30 PM onwards
📍 One Shanthi Road, Shantinagar.

Because when one q***r athlete stands on the podium, an entire community stands a little taller—and India shines a little brighter. 🇮🇳🌈

We invite you to "What The Material Knows," the final stage of a 15-day artist-mentor residency (AASPADA ART SPACE) and open house (Sketches from the Road), at 1Shanthiroad. The opening of the exhibition will be on Thursday, 23 July 2026, at 6 pm. The show will be on view till 26 July 2026.

What The Material Knows
Materials that don't behave the way you'd expect. Some pieces are settled, some still changing—drying, fermenting, reacting—For as long as the show runs. It's what was found when the material was caught mid-process, at whatever stage it was in. Material holds memory before the artist adds any of their own. It moulds the maker as much as it's moulded—sometimes a collaborator, doing half the thinking; sometimes an escape, a way of thinking with the hands when the head runs out. Nothing here explains itself fully. What happens when you let the material do the talking?

epoch Studio/Lab is an artist-initiated project by Bharathesh GD, dedicated to fostering multidisciplinary dialogue and reflective engagement. Functioning as a nomadic platform without a fixed physical site, it develops through collaborations with existing institutions, organisations, and spaces. Conceived as both a studio and a laboratory, epoch Studio/Lab facilitates hybrid discourses and experimental practices, creating a dynamic context for collective inquiry and cultural exchange.
