Now, on to ‘varnams’. The varnam traditionally performed in music concerts is usually a ‘Tana varnam’ with fewer lyrics and generally a faster tempo, while the varnam in dance concerts is usually a ‘Pada varnam’ with more lyrics suitable for elaborating the ‘abhinaya’ and sung in a more leisurely pace.
Dhvani’s Nikhil, Vaishnavi, Ameya, Gayatri, and Rooptej will sing the varnam ‘Inthamodi’ in raga Saranga. Raga Saranga is a janya ragam of the popular Kalyani ragam (65th melakarta).
Hema, Krithika, Nivedita, and Gayatri will render the ‘Navaragamalika’ varnam Valachi Vacchi. Navaragamalika is a composition in Carnatic Music that is composed using a collection of nine ragas. Each verse is set to a different raga. This Patnam Subramania Iyer composition includes the nine ragams of Kedaram, Sankarabharanam, Kalyani, Begada, Kambhoji, Yadukulakamboji, Bilahari, Mohanam and Shree ragam.
Vaishnavi, Isha, and will present the ‘Sami ninne kori’ varanam in Shree ragam, which is considered an ancient ragam in the Carnatic tradition. Shree ragam is also a janya ragam, belonging to the Kharaharapriya (22nd melakarta) family. It is the last of the 5 Ghana rāgams of Carnatic music. This pleasing and popular rāgam is also considered highly auspicious.
Next, Dhvani students Avyakta, Uthara, and Shruti will render the Saveri varnam, Sarasuda Ninne. Saveri is a janya of the 15th Melakarta raga Mayamalavagowla. This raga brings out karuna rasa - the mood of pity.
