-----ARTIST PROFILE OF VIDWAN R KARTHIK-----
R. Karthik was born to sri R.S.Ravikumar and Smt S Vasumathi on 09 Sep 1986. Karthik started learning mridangam at the age of 7 and has been performing and accompanying for various concerts since his young age.
Karthik has steadily carved a niche for himself in the percussive field, having accompanied senior and young musicians alike and been loved by them both! He is a triple threat, with primarily playing Khanjira but also accomplished in playing Mridanga and reciting konnakkol. He started his training in Mridanga under the guidance of Vid.MG Gopalakrishnan before coming under the tutelage of Vid. Bangalore V Praveen and Vid. K N Krishnamurthy. He was attracted to the playing of khanjari by legendary sri g harishankar and started learning khanjari under the able guidance of sri vid c p vyasavittala who is a senior disciple of sri vid g harishankar, at the age of 16. He is an "A" graded artiste of the AIR for Khanjira apart from being “B-High”graded for both Mridangam and Konnakkol.
He has completed vidwat exam in the mridangam (2nd rank) and he has won several prizes and government scholarships to his credit. he is also a prize winner of air annual competitions and is an “a” graded khanjira artist of all india radio, bangalore. he also got his air B-High grades recently for mridangam and konnakhol.
Academically he has completed his engineering from vtu in information science. he is an engineer by profession and is currently working for cognizant.
Karthik has accompanied a wide variety of eminent artists. to name a few vidwans/vidhushis: k s gopalakrisnan (flute), kumari kanyakumari (violin), hyderabad brothers, rudrapatnam brothers, bombay sisters, neela ramgopal, dr vidyabhushan, dr r ganesh, s shankar, dr nagavalli nagaraj, kalavathy avadhoot, m s vidya, harini sharada, kasaravalli sisters, ravichandra kulur (flute), rajkamal (flute), chandan kumar (flute), saralaya sisters, ls sheshagiri rao (violin), veena varuni (veena) etc.
Karthik is also a part of “khanjari vyasa manjari“, which is a unique percussion ensemble, directed by his guru vid c p vyasavittala.
He has won several prizes for his percussive talents at prestigious competitions:- Bangalore All India Radio awarded the “A GRADE” recognizing his playing skills on the KHANJIRA (2016); Awarded KALAVANTA for best Accompaniment from Karnataka Fine Arts Council (KFAC) in the All India level Concert competitions (2015); Malleshwaram Sangeeta Sabha and Ananya has awarded ANAYA PRATIBHE (2009) – Hanumath Jayanti Yuva Sangeetotsava; 1st prizes in Inter Collegiate competitions for Mridangam at KSIT (2007), Mahaveer Jain college (2003), Visvesvaraya technological University (2007), BMS college Utsav (2007), Sir MVIT Kalalanjali (2004), VTU fest (2006), Yuvajanotsava (2004, 2005 and 2006); 1ST Prize at Percussive Arts centre for Senior Category Khanjira (Talavadya Pratiyogita 2014); 1st Prize at Bangalore Gayana Samaja – 34th Music Conference for Senior Category (2002);1st Prize at Malleshwaram Sangeetha Sabha (2001) for Junior Category.
