Sometimes inspiration arrives as a place, a moment, a story or even an old fishing net that has stood by the sea for generations.

As artists, we just have to be present enough to notice it, feel it, and turn that feeling into something of our own.

This morning in Kochi, I found my inspiration in these iconic fishing nets and turned that moment into a watercolor.

St. Francis CSI Church in Kochi is one of India’s oldest European-built churches, dating back to the early 16th century.

What caught my eye wasn’t the grand front façade…

It was the back view.

There was something about the old walls, the architecture, the light, and the quiet atmosphere that made me stop and think — I need to paint this.

So, this became my first Kochi painting.

And in the coming days, I’m going to paint the front view too.

Two views. One historic place.
Let’s see how Kochi unfolds on my easel.

In watercolor, the brightest white often comes from what you don’t paint. By protecting the white of the paper and building stronger values around it, the light suddenly begins to glow.

That beautiful contrast is one of the reasons I love this medium so much.

People often see the finished painting.
Very few see the habits behind it. This is my morning. Simple. Consistent. And something I’m grateful for every single day.

What’s one morning habit that has changed your life? I’d love to hear it in the comments.

Every beautiful watercolor is built one layer at a time. Stop trying to finish your painting in the first wash, and you’ll be amazed at how much easier watercolor becomes.
