In the harsh early days of struggle, Mithun Chakraborty once faced rejection from filmmaker Manmohan Desai—a moment that has since become part of Bollywood folklore. As the story goes, Desai not only dismissed Mithun’s potential as a leading man but also handed him ₹10, suggesting he buy himself a meal and reconsider his dreams of becoming a hero.
Like many outsiders trying to break into Bollywood, Mithun Chakraborty spent his initial years knocking on countless doors in search of opportunity. Manmohan Desai was one such gatekeeper. At the time, Desai reportedly saw no spark of stardom in the young aspirant and advised him to pursue a different path altogether.
But destiny had other plans.
By the 1980s, Mithun Chakraborty had rewritten his narrative. With a string of box office successes and an undeniable connect with the masses, he emerged as one of the biggest stars of the decade. Interestingly, this phase coincided with a temporary dip in Amitabh Bachchan’s cinematic dominance, as the superstar briefly shifted focus toward politics, reducing his presence on screen. Mithun seized the moment, climbing to the top tier of Bollywood’s leading men.
With Mithun’s “Midas touch” driving films to commercial success, Manmohan Desai eventually turned to him in hopes of recreating box office magic. Ironically, Desai seemed to have forgotten his earlier dismissal of Mithun—but Mithun hadn’t. Yet, in a display of remarkable grace, the actor chose not to dwell on past bitterness. Recognizing that the director now needed him, Mithun agreed to be part of Desai’s ambitious comeback project alongside Amitabh Bachchan—Ganga Jamuna Saraswati.
By the late 1980s, Amitabh Bachchan was poised for a strong return to cinema, and Desai envisioned this film as a vehicle to restore his superstar status. To strengthen the project, Mithun Chakraborty was brought on board, with the belief that his presence would ensure commercial success.
However, industry whispers suggest that behind the scenes, creative decisions told a different story. Mithun’s screen time was reportedly reduced, and his role scaled down to amplify Amitabh’s presence—hinting at an undercurrent of favoritism.
The result? Ganga Jamuna Saraswati turned out to be a major box office disaster.
For Manmohan Desai, the fallout was severe. The film’s failure marked a significant decline, effectively bringing an end to his illustrious career as a director—closing the chapter with an irony that Bollywood, perhaps, never forgets.
