Last Saturday at Atta Galatta, something quietly wonderful happened.

People new to Playback Theatre and people who've been practising for a while, came together in the same room. Stories were told. And played back.

That's the magic of a jam. No hierarchy of experience. Just the willingness to show up, listen, and give someone's moment back to them - in movement, music, and image.

Some moments made us laugh. Some made us pause. All of them mattered.

Come to the next one...

In the Mahabharata, wars might have been fought with weapons,
But destinies were often shaped by voices that went unheard.
- A fisherman’s daughter negotiating power.
- A lone prince speaking against injustice in a hall that refuses to listen.
- A warrior choosing which voices to follow - and which to silence.

These questions from the epic echoed powerfully in the room, as First Drop Theatre brought together Playback Theatre and storytelling with Aparna Jaishankar for 'The Voices We Ignore'.

In a full house, personal stories from the audience emerged - of a voice unheard at workplaces due to being a minority, age-wise, of women in families who never had space to speak, of discovering an inner voice that had long been ignored, of humour masking truth, of trusting one’s inner voice when the world and the legal system advised otherwise, and of the quiet liberation of finally letting that voice be heard - first to the self and then to others.

From epic dilemmas to everyday life, the question remains:
Which voices do we listen to?
And which ones do we ignore?
Thank you to everyone who filled the room with listening, sharing, and trusting.

About the Show:
What are the whispers we silence?
The truths we avoid?
The intuitions we override?
The people we fail to hear?

Through the powerful format of Playback Theatre, we will listen to your personal, real-life stories of the unheard voices . Interwoven with this will be storytelling from the Mahabharata where unheard voices often shape destinies. Come, be there to witness, reflect, and listen - to each other, and to ourselves.

This unique blend of Playback Theatre and oral storytelling is something First Drop Theatre has been exploring and presenting over the last several years. India has a rich and deep tradition of oral storytelling, and when it combines with Playback Theatre, it creates a wondrous amalgamation with a uniquely Indian touch.

Playback Theatre - Magical, creative, thought-provoking, reflective, unscripted...just like life itself. A format of improvisational, interactive theatre where the actors will play back your real-life stories on-the-spot, in an authentic and respectful manner, using text, poetry, movement, metaphors, music and more!

Poster Description - An image of a multi-coloured, half-open mouth from which emerges abstract sound waves that disperse in different directions. The Title is mentioned above this image, and below it are the show details like the venue, date, location, and time.

Recently, we had the privilege of performing 'Treat With Care' in Hyderabad, for the open public and for the pre-conference participants of IAPCON, the national palliative care conference.

This scripted performance weaves together real stories of patients and doctors in palliative care - stories of vulnerability, dignity, fatigue, love, dilemmas, and deep humanity.

We followed the performance with a short Playback Theatre intervention, inviting the audience to share what care means to them. The responses were moving, layered, and deeply personal. The space transformed into a collective reflection on compassion, not just as a medical act, but as a human stance.
The warmth with which the play was received, and the testimonials that followed, remind us why this work matters.

If you would like to bring 'Treat With Care' to your hospital, institution, or organisation , to open conversations around care, empathy, and relational medicine, we would love to connect.
Let’s continue expanding the circle of care.

First Drop Theatre has been invited to perform 'Treat with Care' - a play of intimate, human stories that explore palliative care beyond fear and misunderstanding. Stories about presence, dignity, listening, and the quiet courage it takes to have honest conversations.

Inspired by real-life patient experiences from St. John’s Medical College Palliative Care Centre, these stories invite us to look at care not as an ending, but as a deeply human process. After the scripted performance, we open the space gently - through a Playback Theatre intervention - inviting audience members to share what stayed with them, what moved them, and what perhaps went unspoken.

This invitation holds special meaning for us. For over a decade, First Drop Theatre has been exploring the meeting point of Applied Theatre and Healthcare, listening to stories that are often hard to hear, yet essential to hold. And we are excited to continue to explore this format that we pioneered - of combining a scripted performance (based on real-life stories) followed with the power of a Playback Theatre intervention.

If you are in Hyderabad, we would love for you to be with us.
The shows are open and not ticketed.

At First Drop Theatre, we partnered with NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad and SheSR to conduct workshops on Gender Sensitization and PoSH awareness for the IT industry using Applied Theatre.
The workshops were held in Hyderabad and Bangalore - one for an open audience at NALSAR campus and another with ABB - with participants from HR, Legal, and PoSH teams.

Using tools of Applied Theatre, including role play and Forum Theatre interventions, we explored a range of workplace scenarios. This experiential approach enabled participants to identify red flags, understand appropriate courses of action, and gain clarity on the governing laws and responsibilities.

The sessions were highly interactive and served as a powerful learning experience around a critical and non-negotiable aspect of today’s workplace culture. It was wonderful to see how Applied Theatre and the ensuing discussions led to engaged participation that made these workshops impactful.

Sri Lanka was an enriching and memorable experience in early December, made even more special by being hosted by The Basement Playback Theatre Company, an enthusiastic and wonderfully talented team of Playback Theatre practitioners in Sri Lanka.

What began as an invitation to conduct a one day workshop soon turned into something far deeper. Radhika and Bejoy had the joy of working with a group that was open, curious, deeply engaged, and eager to explore. Together, they played with:
- the power of metaphor in Playback Theatre
- deepening the role of Ninja actors
- the subtle art of working as an ensemble
It was a privilege to share from my practice and support the group in deepening their Playback journey.

The day felt invigorating and heart warming, reminding once again of the power of shared stories, collective creativity, and what becomes possible when people truly listen to one another.

Grateful to Team Basement Playback Theatre Company for your warmth, hospitality, and commitment to the craft.

At the Quest 2 Learn 2025 Conference, we stood at a familiar edge - where hope and anxiety about the future coexist.
Through our Playback Theatre performance, people shared what it feels like to live inside this moment: curiosity sparked late in a career, fear about what AI means for human connection, concern for climate and livelihoods, and the quiet relief of reconnecting with the world through friendship, movement, and presence.
These weren’t answers or predictions. They were lived experiences - reminding us that young people, educators, and communities are already shaping the future through how they stay with uncertainty, care for one another, and keep learning.
Kudos to QUEST Alliance for creating space to pause, reflect, and imagine together.
