Impressions of the exhibiton
𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝘆𝘀

The installation was mapping a linguistic space between the Kannada and German language. Visitors were invited to participate and interact with the installation by playing around with 3D printed cars on trails of wet clay, leaving behind linguistic traces.
Thereby navigating through language became a performative experience.

His exhibition at basis Project space (16/17/18.12.2022) concluded his three-month residency that took place within the framework of AIR_Frankfurt in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore .

Tranlatoys, 2022.

The intend behind this installation was to provide a space for a concise linguistic exchange and discussions by the virtue of a cognitive and performative experience. Visitors were able to interact and play with 3D printed toy cars on trails of wet clay, in turn leaving behind a continuous chain of alphabetical impressions as tire tracks. Picking up expressions from my initial day to day encounters and observations in Frankfurt, these constituted semantic words that examined various anecdotes translating between the languages: Kannada and Deutsch.

I would like to thank e.V for being such lovely hosts and obviously for this wonderful opportunity.
Also very grateful for the constant support from friends both in
India and Germany.

Shivu Kaparthi Mahesh’s artistic practice is characterized by translating everyday observations, personal anecdotes, and memories into material forms. He works with clay, 3D animation, and 3D printing, examining the relation between aesthetics and utility.

His first exhibition in Europe at basis Project space in Frankfurt am Main concludes his three-month residency that is taking place within the framework of AIR_Frankfurt in cooperation with the Goethe Institute Max Mueller Bhavan Bangalore .

In the exhibition Translatoys, Mahesh is mapping a linguistic space between the Kannada language, spoken in South India, and the German language. Highlighting various differences in script, signs, and vocabulary, he still finds similarities, which he illustrates with 15 words. With 3D-printed cars, those words can be inscribed into streets of clay covering the exhibition space. Visitors are invited to participate in leaving linguistic traces thus completing the installation in a playful manner. Thereby navigating through language becomes a performative experience.

Hello Everyone! I’m extremely happy to invite all of you to my upcoming exhibition “Translatoys” at basis e.V., Frankfurt as a part of the bangaloREsidency-Expanded program.

Translatoys is a project that aims at providing a space for linguistic exchange and discussions by the virtue of a cognitive and performative experience. Interactive 3D printed cars and clay is used to create this dialogue.

This concludes my 3-month residency within the framework of AIR_Frankfurt in cooperation with
