DARPANASUNDARI -The lady with the mirror.
The first Madanika or Shilabalike at Belur. She is also known as MUKURA MUGDE- The innocent lady who is admiring her beauty.
This is one of the highly stylised and famous sculptures in Indian art. This picture shows the bracket figure mounted on a pillar at the main entrance in Chennakesava temple, Belur, Karnataka.
She is adorned with intricate jewellery with three attendees. It is believed that the main inspiration of this sculpture was the magnificent beauty of Shantala Devi, the Queen of King Vishnuvardhana, the builder of this temple.
