REVIEW OF CARNATIC CONCERT OF VIDWAN SHRI SIKKIL GURUCHARAN, ON APRIL 11, 2023, HELD AT SREE SESHADRIPURAM RAMA SEVA SAMITHI’S 75TH ANNUAL RAMANAVAMI MUSIC FESTIVAL

They say – where words fail, music speaks! As the saint composer, Sadguru Shri Thyagaraja said, “Nadaloludai bramhaanandamandame manasa” – meaning- by becoming a lover of music (Naada), one can attain eternal bliss!
The concert today is ample testimony to this! Such is the power of music – the language of the soul to the universe!!

Vidwan Sikill Gurucharan has always enthralled us with his performances and today was no exception. Multifaceted and multi-talented, - he made a lively start with a varnam in Ragam Nalinakanthi. He followed it up with a short kriti in Ragam Gangeyabhooshani. Madhyamavathi was very beautifully presented.

The kriti- Sri Satyanarayanam seems to be the flavour of the season ! In this Kriti, Vidwan Sri Gurucharan’s versatility came to the fore with ample manodharma. Vid. B K Raghu played a lovely supportive role in this Shubhapantuvarali kriti. Vidushi Ranjani Venkatesh on the mridangam excelled in a male dominated bastion. Vid. Guruprasanna responded very well on the Khanjira. The neraval was very pleasing to the senses in as much as it was imaginative. All the artistes played in perfect tandem – enhancing the overall listening pleasure.

The evergreen Pancharatna kriti in Aarabhi was a welcome number. An interesting presentation was the swara prasthara within the presentation- weaving an intricate tapestry of kalpana swaras. Vid. Gurucharan held the audience enthralled with not a dull moment. The devaranama ‘Pahi Pahi Pahi Guru’ was well sung.

The highlight of the concert was the Kambhoji- the all time favourite raga- the first this season at Seshadripuram. Vid. Gurucharan explored all the myriad emotions and shades of the raga beautifully. The richness of his voice added a delightful embellishment to this composition – nay – to the whole concert!

The co-artistes were very supportive and rose to the occasion admirably. The Thaniavartanam was of a very high order – with Vidushi Ranjani Venkatesh and Vid. Guruprasanna challenging & complementing each other perfectly. Overall this was a top-class performance by Vid Gurucharan and the team.
