TITLE: Unseen
SIZE: 4 ft by 3 ft
MEDIUM: Acrylics and Gesso on Canvas
CONCEPT:
Unseen is the bulk of the iceberg that lies beneath the waterline, supporting the small fraction seen to the naked eye.
Sigmund Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind employs the unseen to represent a being’s unconscious mind. A reservoir of feelings of pain, negative urges, traumatic experiences and socially unacceptable ideas put off the conscious mind by the mechanism of psychological repression. All we see on the surface is the small, bird’s eye view of the iceberg, representing our conscious mind.
The influences of the hidden unconscious mind lead to psychological distress and disturbances, triggering and affecting thoughts and behaviour of the conscious mind.
Most people in this day and age don’t see how this dynamic works, leading to issues on a personal and societal level.
You may not be able to see the entirety of your unconscious mind in a single frame, much like you can’t see the bottom of the iceberg in this artwork. To address it, however, is what is absolutely necessary so the consequences can be controlled and reduced.
One’s conscious mind remains occupied throughout so much so that one often forgets to accept, embrace every emotion and slowly empty the reservoir, that is the unconscious mind.
The purpose of this piece is to remind the viewers to look into the unseen and all that it holds, and take care of their mental well-being.
To sum up, quoting my mentor Sabari Das, “there is always more to it than meets the eye.”
