On May 4, 2023, a mob in B. Phainom village, Manipur, allegedly gang-raped two women and killed a man. The complaint about the incident was filed at the Saikul Police Station by Thangboi Vaiphei, the chief of the village, on June 21, 2023, more than a month after it happened. The complaint also alleges that a third woman was gang-raped by the mob. A case has been registered under Section 153A/398/427/436/448/302/354/364/326/376/34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25(1C) of the Arms Act.
AS PER POLICE AND MEDIA REPORTS
* The mob was reportedly made up of members of the Meitei community, who are the majority ethnic group in Manipur. The Kuki community, to which the two women belonged, is a minority ethnic group.
* The incident took place in the aftermath of communal violence that erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023. The violence was sparked by a demand by the Meitei community for Scheduled Tribe status, which would give them certain benefits from the government.
* The two women who were gang-raped were reportedly paraded naked in front of the mob. They were also reportedly beaten and tortured.
* The man who was killed was the husband of one of the women. He was reportedly shot and killed by the mob.
* The complaint about the incident was filed by Thangboi Vaiphei, the chief of B. Phainom village. Vaiphei alleged that the mob was led by members of the Meetei Leepun, a Meitei youth organization.
* A case has been registered under Section 153A/398/427/436/448/302/354/364/326/376/34 of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25(1C) of the Arms
