For context, this was one of many meals I have had at Izumi Assagao. I have waited over a year to get a collective sense of things before I finally wrote this specific meal review. Also accompanying me were 2 diners with extensive knowledge of Japan, its culture, and in varying degrees its cuisine, weighing in on this conversation.
I think Izumi is one of the best Japanese restaurants in India and will get hopefully get even better.
I certainly understand that my preferences for certain cuisines do not and will probably not match the needs of a financially viable business catering to a particular clientele for now. For example, I must differentiate between Japanese, Chinese, or Korean food in India and everywhere else.
Let's move ahead before it turns into a 'mea culpa antequam crimen'
Impeccable service, a lovely location and decor, good drinks, and attentive staff are the Izumi standard and as always delivered. Even the issues I had with the food were addressed directly by the manager and the chef post-meal.
Izumi gets some of the freshest top-quality fish and does the best robata in India so far. Its desserts always hit it out of the park for me.
Hits not in the pictures above include the miso soup and charred napa babbage, an Izumi gold standard.
I have taken the time to work on Canva to create the pics and details, so will spare you my usual ramblings here.
on a side note: While I was ruminating on how I would write this post-mid-meal, the guests who sat down and started demanding and ordering particularly strange combinations made me wonder if that was the norm and that is why Izumi and others just have to have these dishes served the way they do.
To sum it up, I have shared my opinion with honesty and perhaps some sharp humour. Take it for what it is.
