The last one for this series is a story about a women whom I have not known for a long time, neither she belongs to my family or shares any other connection. Technically speaking, she is my homestay owner where I have been living since last two months in a small village in Himachal Pradesh. While living and spending time with her, I everyday got introduced to an unspeakable affection and love that the pahadi women have for not just their kids but the sheeps they have, the cows they feed, the little lambs who are born, the fields they plough. I somehow felt awestruck and contend to see her devotion and care for her clan. I’ve been following her like a shadow since last few weeks and tried to learn what she does, capture the details and sketch her day. (Note: Though I have penned down Prema aunty’s story, each and every women here follows a very similar routine).

Prema aunty is a 50 year old wife and a mother to 3 humans, 8 sheep, 4 lambs, 3 cows. Born and brought in Tirthan valley of Himachal she got married to her husband, Chunni Lal Thakur when she was very young. After her marriage she came to the other side of the valley and since then has been decorating and living her life here. You’ll never find her sitting at one place for more than 10 minutes. She is more beautiful than what you see in this sketch, always wearing a matching dattu (the scarf on her head which is compulsory for all the married women in this part of the moutntains) with her suit or pattu (a rapor like blanket traditionally woven from sheep wool).

Watching her day in and day out, actively engaging in different chores, I feel awestruck and amazed at the same time. I wish I could work as much like her, with this constant smile on my face.

How can I talk about mother’s day and the idea of motherhood and not mention this particular women who broke this notion of calling one as her child beyond sharing her umbilical chord, way back in time.

The one who’s every frame, sketch and conversation mentions both of them; her little Henry Oats and big Charlie boy. You know about whom I’m talking right? Alicia Souza, you’ve not only given us your quirky illustrations and meaningful characters but you’ve also decoded the definition of being a mother and shower unconditional love to your gunie pig and doggo and we can’t wait to see the first glance of little idly who is bumping inside your belly :)

Thank you for being who you are. You’re a true inspiration and the most genuine illustrator I’ve ever known. Your doodling ethos showcase an everyday living which directly connects me with whatever you create. is a result of that.

Keep creating, keep inspiring 

This particular post is about a women who is a fearsome lady, an independent individual, an astounding designer, a beautiful wife to her husband, a soft-hearted daughter, a sister who is more like a friend, soon to be a farmer AND… a gorgeous mother to her adopted child .

She is one of the kinds who has tried to break all the odds, stood firm by her beliefs most of the times, protested when needed, agreed when required, spoke up when necessary, stood silent when have needed to. I have always looked up on her, tried to become as fearless like her and been inspired by almost all the things she has done/is doing.

She is a very rare of a gem who takes her sweet time but once she has analyzed you top to bottom, she will make you feel comfortable in all senses.

Heard someone calling, “Hey soul sister” who walks towards you and sings, “I’ll be there for you..”. No? Yes? Well, I don’t know about you guys but I have been pretty lucky in this regard. Because I had one in 2011 and I still have one since 2011.

This curly hair beautiful girl has not just been my best of the friends, but a really co-operating house mate, my midnight crying listener, my café hopping and coffee/salad/soup/pasta partner, one who understands the love for blue, with whom I have listed down more than 150 destinations in our to-travel places.

I’ve remained silent for most of the days, not replied to her messages sometimes, missed her calls most of the times, but this one always stood like a strong pillar in my life. She has nurtured me like a mother, advice me like a sister, got drunk and partied until early morning like a crazy friend and has silently walked these beautiful 9 years by my side. When others took me wrong and misunderstood (most of the times), she was their comforting me over a loooong telephonic conversation.

Hence, this particular series of , she holds a very special place because she has been my constant “mein and paridhi”. Paridhi D JAIN, I love you and I mean it.
What about you? Do you also have one of these kinds whom you’re blessed with? Who maybe is a friend but treats you like her kid? Tag them and let them know about this special place they hold in your life :)

Today’s story is even more special because it is about a lady who according to the general norms of our society is not my mother or belongs to my family. But I ask you all how important is that to call one’s self a mother according to these norms? I reject this definition because of this beautiful woman who happened to enter my life in my most beautiful days and somehow stayed there for forever.

She is a lady from whom I learnt how to groom her kids and at the same time adapt with the current modernity while keeping the morals and value systems intact. She has been a really cool mother, a wonderful friend to go back to for a piece of advice, a patient listener to hear you out and beyond everything, an extremely gorgeous designer.

She is one of those who don’t really care about her age when it comes to learn a new skill or experiment in a particular field or simply accompany you for a cup of coffee. All you have to do is sit with her, engage in a meaningful conversation and you won’t regret the hours spent talking and chit-chatting.
She has been very passionately experimenting with her design label since last few years, Fabline Design by Deepal Gajjar. She will devote as much time as you want in order to decide your own particular style. She has immense knowledge of materials, motifs, designs, techniques, regional specifications, colors and contrast.

Dear aunty, thank you for being a constant pole in this journey and be my fellow Libran :)

As I mentioned, I am blessed with a beautiful lineage of wonderful women around whom I have grown. The second in league is my beautiful duo whose genes run in my blood and I know of that fact because we have similar cheek bones.

I’m talking about my nani and my mother. Whenever I introduce myself as a Marwari before a delhiite or an urban planner or a heritage manager, it’s because of them. These two ladies have injected in me those value systems and cultural roots. Since the time I was a small girl, everytime I used to sit in front of the dressing table and watch my mother get ready for different occasions. Most of the times, she used to put a bindi, wear this chunari and her nath (the one she got as a gift from nanu on the day of her wedding) and I used to ask her, ‘when will I get to wear all of this and dress like you”. Most of the times, she smiled answering, ‘on your wedding day, my little girl’.

These two ladies have always been a very strong individual characters, who have been vocal about issues with due respect with their surroundings. I have seen them working for more than 12 hours a day managing the household chores with a constant smile on their face. Because of my nani, living in Rishikesh since her marriage, I also got introduced to the Garhwali culture of the mountains. She used to beautifully carry a Marwari blend with Garhwali rituals. And, that was my second wish; to get married in the mountains just like my nani and carry forward her lineage.

When I even think about the word mother, I have various connotations attached with it. Also because I am blessed with a beautiful lineage of wonderful women around whom I have grown. The first and foremost has to be my grandma, aka amma, also known as chaudhrain of our Bhuraria family.
She got married to my grandfather at the age of 19 in a family as big as 50 people staying together under one roof. Life has always been a cherry for her. She is a total opposite of my grandfather but a lady beyond any of us can be today. She has proved to be an excellent bahu, an adorable mother, a caring saas and a delightful grandmother. If you sit with her for half an hour, it will be a memory created for a life time. She has seen lots of ups and downs in her life but that smile on her face did never fade.

I've grown up seeing her praying, preparing for festivals, following rituals and traditions of our cultural roots, stitching clothes for her i-dont-know-how-many number of gods sitting in our temple. She always loved embroidering her sarees, bedsheets, teaching young girls like me to do the same because ‘kuch saal baad jab shaadi hogi, to apne sasural kya leke jaogi?”. Since last two years she has again started embroidering sarees, kurtas along with other products for an Khayaal. And, she is earning from it at the age of 76.

Today, when I reflect on myself, I think what I wear, what I believe is all that I've got from her. . .

It's not everyday when we say thank you to them.
It's not everyday when we tell them, please take a day off, we will manage on our own.
It's not everyday when we let them know what they mean to us and without their presence in our life, it is dull and pale.
It's not only the blood relation that we are talking about here.
It's about a friend who takes care of you in the most motherly manner.
It's not conditioned to only hoomans, it's an unconditional love and care that she gives to her doggo or a little guinea.
It's about those value systems she keeps grilling inside us without we being aware about it.

Hence, this Mother's day (which is next Sunday) let's make an effort to thank them? And be thankful of the motherly love they share with us.

For next one week I'll be sharing a set of examples about the mother's (more metaphorically) who have inspired me, loved me, conditioned me into who I am today.
If you also feel to share a story here, let me know. We can together curate something for that special women in our life :) . .

It's the 28th Day of lockdown across the country and all of us feel stuck, some in their respective homes, few in their working cities, few on the roads, while the remaining in the middle of nowhere. But a lot of us who can read this post are getting basic meals, shelter and a level of comfort.

Yes, we had planned our trips for this summer. Yes we had bookings done. Yes, we wanted to check-in to those destinations. But we can't. And we shouldn't. So if we can't travel out, how about travelling back?

Since I can't travel to new destinations, I have started sketching out the memories and places which I have visited and hold a special place in my heart. That crystal blue beach in Goa, that hot and warm lal chai in Darjeeling, that beautiful wooden cottage in Himachal, that serene night in the houseboat in Kerala... Why don't you pick up one destination, scroll down pictures from that place and sketch a memory? Share here and don't forget to tag as we will feature you in our special travel month.

Try it out, it's fun :)

4. My inspiration. These days I keep quiet and observe. I observe the little details around me. The orange sky, the red bird, the blue Mountain, the changing colours of the hillside, trees, birds, cicadas, pine cones, the wind in tall deodars, the unsaid conversations, the rambled pathways, the quite fields, the unfamiliar eyes, the freshly grown peas.
And when I come back home, I draw.
What's your inspiration that keeps you going? . .

2. More often I strive for my space and my little corner that I love to customize. Because this gives me a sense of ownership and privacy at the same time.

Hence, utilising these quarantine days to customize my comfy corner with my favourite books, my framed painting, my beloved pluto (cactii), a pin board to pin my important notes, a white board to scribble my thoughts, a turquoise cup with hot chai, a sitting, a big wooden window, lots of sunlight and myself.

Do you also strive for your corner and your space? Do you have your corner? Want to share with us? Feel free to post a picture on your story and tag . .
