Focus on Tal R.’s works currently featured in Summertime at Sommer Contemporary Art

Tal R’s work brings together images, references and memories without settling into a single meaning. Flowers, animals, night scenes and everyday objects move freely across his paintings and drawings, where color and instinct often come before interpretation.

He has described this way of gathering images through the Hebrew word « kolbojnik, » literally meaning a plate for leftovers, collecting fragments from different places, high and low, and allowing them to come together on paper or canvas. As he puts it: « I do painting a bit like people make a lunch box (…) I constantly have this hot-pot boiling and I throw all kinds of material into it. »

In Summertime at Sommer Contemporary Art, four works from 2024 reflect this approach, moving between flowers and night hours through drawing, color and repetition. Rather than simply depicting their subjects, the works turn them into recurring elements within a visual language that is distinctly his own.

Summer is all about light.

The kind that brightens a room, changes throughout the day, catches a surface, or quietly transforms the way we look at a work. In Summertime, our new group exhibit, each artwork engages with light in its own way : through color, movement, reflection, texture, or the openness of a blank space.

This is your reminder to go see art outside ☀️

Some artworks are best experienced beyond the gallery walls. In gardens, courtyards, parks, and public spaces, the landscape, the light, and the passing seasons become part of the work itself.

Here are a few outdoor moments from Sommer artists.

From the gallery to the museum.

We are delighted to share that Lihi Turjeman’s Scroll (2025) has been acquired by the מוזיאון ישראל, ירושלים Jerusalem, through the museum’s Here & Now Contemporary Israeli Art Acquisitions Committee.

Lihi now joins a remarkable group of Sommer artists represented in the museum’s collection, including Guy Ben-Ner, Sharon Ya’ari, Shai Azoulay, Yehudit Sasportas, and many others.

Spanning generations, mediums, and artistic practices, these works entered the museum at different moments and through different paths. Together, they form a living portrait of contemporary Israeli art.

Congratulations to Lihi Turjeman and to the Israel Museum on this meaningful addition.

Some seasons are best remembered through images. Here is how summer is viewed through the eyes of our artists.

This selection brings together works by Sommer artists that linger on the feeling of the season: shifting light, familiar landscapes, quiet moments, and colors that stay with us long after the days grow shorter. Different practices, different perspectives, yet all connected by the way they transform everyday moments into lasting images.

Some of these works will be available to view in our Summer salon, opening on July 31.

🇫🇷 Happy early Bastille Day !

Tomorrow, we celebrate Saâdane Afif - a French artist whose practice continues to expand the possibilities of language, music, and image.

Born in Vendôme in 1970 to a family of Algerian heritage, Afif has carried a distinctly French artistic sensibility into an international career. Winner of the Prix Marcel Duchamp in 2009, he now lives and works in Berlin, where his work continues to question the connections between art, culture and collective memory.

This season, Afif’s work is on view across Germany:

• Posters / Posters at Museum Folkwang, Essen, until October 4 (Museum Folkwang)
• Five Preludes at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin, until September 13 (hamburger_bahnhof)
• Shifting the Silence at Lenbachhaus, Munich, until January 31, 2027 (Lenbachhaus)
• BUT I | WORLD | I SEE | YOU as part of the 9th Triennial of Photography Hamburg, at Hamburger Kunsthalle, until October 4 (Hamburger Kunsthalle)

His new monograph Affiches, published by Triangle Books, is the first publication dedicated entirely to his iconic poster works (more in our « Readings » highlight).
