BTA 010 - We had the honour to talk with Dollar Slice Bootlegs !!!
1. What do you do?
What do I do exactly if you don’t know about me? Wellll, if ya don’t know about me….
Hi my name is Dollar $lice, I make all sorts of different designer toy art mainly in resin. I heavily lean into original characters and occasionally will throw an over strong opinion on social issues in there too.
2. For how long?
I’ve been kickin out the resin close to 8 years now! I taught myself to mold and cast in 2014 and took off from there. Besides Man Or Monster doing a few toys before me, I pioneered the magnetic articulation that is now a standard in the scene. That’s because of me, you’re welcome.
3. How did you get into making bootleg toys?
I’ve always been obsessed with toys and had no idea that I could actually mold and cast original toys. Once I found $ucklord, Falcon Toys, Killer and Healey in 2014, I had to do what they were doing too. So I taught myself and started making some really unique pieces that set me apart from the rest of the newer artists of my time.
4. What's your main focus?
I love all of it! Seriously, it’s the best feeling ever making toys and art. If it’s cutting the tips off my fingers cutting out cardbacks or finding the perfect set of hands to source for a new monster to tweaking on new characters… it’s all just an epic buzz. Like it still really baffles me that this s**t is what I get to do and like the fact I get to make toys for a living still hasn’t lost its novelty.
5. What isnpires you?
I’m really fu**in weird man. Like I’m fu**ing strange. You see a piece of spit out gum on the sidewalk. I see a character with a backstory, a personality, a whole universe in which it exists and I see a purpose for that character to exist to begin with. Probably drugs too. Like I just shot up a joint in my toes 5 minutes ago. I almost overdosed but my wife kicked my in the face enough times that I woke up. Only cause like I started choking on my teeth but whatevs…. I really love creating characters and universes ya know? Like with a toy you can just throw some pieces together and call it a day or you can completely develop an entire reality around it and reaaaaally dive in ya know? I think it’s my weirdo imagination and my love of toys that gets me doing what I does.
6. Any dream projects?
Dude, I’m working with Adam Barton on a new line of characters/toys that will be sculpted by the legend Scott Hensey. I’m working on a comic book for The Big Rad Wolf with Neil Devlin aka Last Boss Comics. I’ve made toys for actors who played Star Wars characters that were never released. I can hit up $ucklord or Killer to collab any time I want to…. I’ve even worked with Nike and Todd Bratrud…It’s fu**ing crazy. I dunno what to say, I’m like in process with dream projects all the time.
7. Favourite piece you made?
All of them. I’ve always said, make stuff you would want to have 50 of on your shelf and you’ll never be bummed on any release… cause it’s true. But if I was gonna break it down by just a handful? SlaughterBot, Death To False Resin, Chongbot-420, Supreme Morrissey, The Big Rad Wolf… yeah I can’t do it, I’ll just end up writing all my pieces out haha.
8. Anything you want to ad?
YEAH!! Keep your eyes peeled for the upcoming $LICE CITY REBELS toy line that I’m collaborating with Adam Barton on!! It will be all new interpretations of classic D$B characters through the lense of Adam Barton and sculpted into toys by Scott Hensey of playmates ninja turtles heritage. I’m really excited for that whole project and it should be launching early Q2 2022!! Also I have a comic with Neil Devlin on the way based off my character The Big Rad Wolf that’s in the works… there will be updates on that soon too!! I have some surprises with Machine 56 also that Mathew Roman is sculpting up… just keep that extra $$$ stashed for 2022 and D$B cause you’re not going to want to miss anything I drop.
