Lustre is metallic decoration on the surface of ceramic forms, which may be of wheel-thrown or hand-built elements or both. The exotic golds, silvers and bright reds have seized the imagination of artist potters and connoisseurs of ceramics for over 1,200 years. Iridescence is created in the same way as a rainbow and lustres are equally elusive. Colours appear to change according to the light spec

trum where and when they are displayed. In the quiet morning light soft blues appear; the copper and gold are favoured by indirect light. Akin to alchemy, the transformation of dull metal compounds to gleaming reflective metal, is achieved in special firing conditions. Lustre requires at least 3 firings. In an electric kiln, the clay is first hardened and then a glaze is fired on it that itself contains pigments of precious metals. In the final decoration before the third firing, I add clay pigments of oxygen-containing metal salts, usually of copper or silver. The work is then fired to a low temperature in my gas kiln before closing the kiln chimney. This causes the oxygen-starved flames to leap up and take the oxygen from the metallic salts, reducing these pigments to pure metal buried permanently in the glaze. Aromatic woods may be placed in the kiln to aid this process, while keeping a careful balance of temperature and atmosphere.
