Third spaces in Architecture - Sometimes a place is seen as a metaphor, a symbolic entity created to escape uncomfortable interactions. The formation of the great divide, separating private from public life, is an indelible contrast to the century-old idea of placemaking born out of public and social space beyond the realms of home and work. Solitude became a necessity, and leisure was privatised. So where have these social disappeared?

There was an air of stillness, a quiet town with only a couple of people seen outside. We got off and began walking slowly up and down the old town - Khalil ; in Arabic after the name of Ibrahim or Hebron, city of Abraham. Situated 30 km south of Jerusalem, on the western side of Jordan. A city like Jerusalem and Jericho with centuries old history carved into the stones and buried under the fertile soil. Hebron lies among four Rocky Mountains and overlooks the sea by a level of 3000 ft. This explains the ups and downs, twist and turns one has to embark. A tangled pathway with tunnel like houses on each side inhabited by the very few Palestinians, leads one to a humble flight of steps culminating at the entrance of Ibrahimi Mosque. Herod is believed to have erected the very first structure in this ancient site - site of the cave that houses the resting bodies of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, Leah and Joseph. The lower enclosure wall of the structure built of Herodus stones is a testament to the imprints of centuries old construction. The walls, ceilings adorned with calligraphy art, mosaics and stones, niches and mimbar lay quietly revealing the many conquests, protection and destruction by the Byzantines, the Umayyads, the Crusaders, the Egyptian Mamluks and the Turkish Ottomans before finally falling into the hands of the Britishers and Israelis who have also left their mark on the grandeur through the destruction of minarets, eastern door and steps. Today the complex is heavily guarded, with check points and detectors to The mosque and its city has been a flash point of violence ever since the 1967 war. Keeping aside the turbulent past we enter the mosque and walk towards prophet Abraham.

Palestine Stories
Some traditional Kahva, the flakiest of Baklava and a cherry topping. Kindness is universal, some people choose it and some don’t. Sometimes some places thrive through people without faces or names engraving their small big gestures in our mind and we leave with all the little heaps of memories, nameless and faceless moments marked in time. I will never know the person who offered us this nor will I ever be able to thank him but I know for sure, somewhere around the Aqasa Complex, he is there, nameless and faceless, walking around distributing kindness and peace.

This. In the land of Quds.
When we decided to embark on this journey, and I would call it the journey of a lifetime because if you know the political air of Israel you will know that it is not easy to get access to this worldly place. One can reach as close as to the edge and asked not to enter citing no apparent reason. With all possibilities in mind, I made sure that I thoroughly understood and learned about the place ; the history, the politics, the architecture, the many many battles engulfed in power, religion, romance and greed. I made sure that I would be walking into a familiar place where I would recognize the Herodus stones, mosaics that resemble Byzantine churches, Romanesque arches, the bloody remains of Crusader conquest, architectural imprints spanning various periods. With our visa thankfully not rejected, we began our travel from Amman to Jerusalem by road to the third holiest site of Islam and the first Qibla ( prayer direction ). Nothing prepares you for the sight that you are about to encounter, it’s a mixed emotion where on one side there are these massive columns, arches and walls and on the other side, they are visibly decorated with bullet marks. No photographs can capture the life of this rich landscape, no words can describe the warmth and love of the wonderful, selfless people I had the fortune to meet and engage with. This is exactly why I consider architecture to be multi dimensional ; the people, the culture, the landscapes, the engineering and a purpose that ties all of it together. There is a window to every phenomenal building and it has to be found, opened and pondered upon. Every monument is a story, a sequence of events , of tragedy and celebration, of theft and offerings, of death and life. Born out of ashes, Aqasa and her side by Jewel stands tall with all their glory and magnificence.
