What is the weekly Torah portion?

The weekly Torah portion, "Parashat Hashavua", is one of 54 "Parshot" into which it is customary in the Jewish tradition to divide the five books of Moses, the Torah.

The purpose of the division into weekly portions is to allow continuous reading, in order, of the entire Torah each year, beginning and ending on Simchat Torah – which follows immediately after the festival of Sukkot (The Feast of Tabernacles).

It is customary to read the weekly portion in the synagogue every Shabbat, study it and interpret it.
