Step back in time to the year of 1661 for "A Tale of Florence Newton".
Presented by Spirit of Youghal Events, as part of Culture Night 2026, this immersive story will transport you into one of Ireland's most famous witch trials.

Accused of bewitching Mary Longdon and causing the death of David Jones, she was imprisoned and tortured at the age of 65. The outcome of the trial is unknown.

But who was the real Florence Newton? Was she simply a begger woman or a gifted healer with a remarkable knowledge of herbs and medicinal plants? Did she truly posses supernatural powers, or was she simply a victim of circumstance?

"A Tale of Florence Newton" will make you question everything you thought you knew about "The Witch of Youghal"
Blending historical records with original research and presenting new theories, this unique event will leave you with a mixture of emotions as we blend humour with tragedy.

Suitable for all ages and runs from 7pm to 9pm

While we don’t have direct proof that Florence Newton was a healer, it fits a very common historical pattern during the time she would have lived in.

Many people accused of witchcraft were simply those with knowledge, ancient wisdom or social positions that made others uneasy.

So the accusations would begin and the whispers that followed sowed the seeds of distrust among the people. Neighbours and friends turned on one another to save their own lives and assets, often joining the mob that accused their former friends, healers and those unfortunate enough to have just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Florence Newton was one of these people.

Accused of bewitching Mary Longdon and causing the death of David Jones, she was imprisoned and tortured at the age of 65 or so. The outcome of the trial is unknown.

We will tell her story this year, on the 365th anniversary of her trial.

You were the radiant sun that brought warmth, light, laughter, and a sense of fun to every moment we shared with you. Just like the glow of the moon your presence illuminated any room, or place that you entered, with that beautiful smile and those mischievous eyes. Just as the stars sparkle tirelessly in the night sky, your sparkle, and infinite kindness will forever shine in our hearts, guiding us through every bright and dark moment alike. Fly high our beautiful friend. As you move onwards may your journey be filled with magic, joy, and endless adventures, knowing you will always be loved and remembered ❤️

Did you know that Florence had a familiar who was a greyhound?! The main purpose of familiars was to serve the witch, providing protection for them as they came into their new powers. Familiars could be black cats, toads, dogs or even in some cases fairies (not of the Tuatha Dé Danann) kind! Florence's "greyhound" visited her when she was in jail....
