Where did all our trees go?
Imagine an island once known as the "Wild People of the Woods" An island culture born out of a wild Celtic Rainforest.
We developed a martial art, an alphabet, had ruling dynasties and spiritual leaders gathering under specially selected sacred trees.
Surnames, Placenames, superstitions and customs all born out of the world our knew.
And today, we're one of the lowest in the world for tree cover. That number includes the 9% of Coillte plantations too!! Which frustratingly are absolute biodiversity nightmares. As are Coillte themselves.
But there is hope, this is the official number, it doesn't include the acres and acres of rewilded gardens across the island, paddocks that are now orchards, the Bealtaine Hawthorns planted in recent years outside schools and community centres. Keep planting people!
If you want to learn more about the woodland world of Celtic, Viking and Medieval Ireland, or why you should be guerilla planting trees in your neighborhood come for a walk with me as we explore one of the 0.01% of ancient native forests. Its truly a magical place to learn and you'll never see nature the same again!🌳 🧚♂️
