OH THE CHEER!

Oh the Cheer that Rose up
When Mayo hoisted the
Sam Maguire Cup!
Snared for seventy-five years
In the bowels of Croagh Patrick,
In the bottom spit of the Ceide Fields,
The Cheer bust free and shook
Croke Park with gay abandon.
A lancing of the boil of heartbreaks.
We Mayo are the l***r cured by Jesus
Who came back, and came back,
Giving thanks to the Almighty
And now at last we are free to frolic
In the sunshine of the winners circle.
And when Sam Maguire was raised
For the zillion time, we cheered
And cheered, and cried and cried
For those belonging to us who wore
The colours and flew the flag but
Passed before this blessed time.
Oh the Cheer that Rose up

Padraig McLoughlin is a self-published author and poet from Westport, Co. Mayo, having committed to writing since his retirement as a secondary school teacher of English and History.

His work is inspired by his locality, its history, its people and their stories. His debut novel of historical fiction, Only The Stones Never Die (2021) took many years to research and write and was shortlisted for the Carousel Aware Prize for Independent Authors in 2024.

Since 2021, he has written the follow up to his debut, When The Heavens Deny and a collection of poetry, Westport, A Blessing on the Soul. His most recent work, The Newspaper Men, The Doris Brothers and Ireland, 1893 - 1923; a history book based on the lives of the Doris brothers who developed The Mayo News newspaper, was released in September 2025 and has been warmly received.

He is currently nearing completion of his third work of historical fiction, a novel named 'Sibby.'
