Purple Flag Waterford

Purple Flag Waterford Experience a great night out in Waterford's diverse, vibrant and welcoming Purple Flag Zone! What is Purple Flag? Who is involved in the process?

The Purple Flag award, accreditated by the Association of Town and City Management, represents a well managed night life and city centre between 5pm - 5am. Purple Flag is a Gold Standard accreditation recognising our city centre as a safe, welcoming and vibrant place for residents and visitors alike. This accreditation is awarded to Waterford for excellence in managing our evening and night-time e

conomy in our city centre. The flag is the indicator of where to go for a good night out; it recognises that Waterford is vibrant, safe, appealing, well-managed and offers a positive experience to consumers. The Purple Flag is the “gold standard” for town centres at night. Purple Flag framework aims to raise standards and improve the quality of our city between the hours of 5.00 pm and 5.00 am. It is an accreditation scheme based on a set of standards and towns and cities that meet the standards can fly the flag. Waterford’s Purple Flag Steering & Working Group is drawn from all the main stakeholders in the city centre area: Waterford Chamber, Waterford City & County Council, Gardai, Waterford Business Group, private businesses including transport providers, retailers, restaurants, pubs and clubs, sport and entertainment providers. Why has Waterford applied for a Purple Flag? Waterford already provides a wide range of activities however; achieving the Purple Flag status brings positive publicity to the city and encourages further diverse activities. We would like to encourage more people to come to Waterford in the evenings, not just young people, but older people and families with young children. We want to make sure that people visiting Waterford feel safe and that they are in a city that is clean, attractive and accessible. A city where they can have a good night out not just in the local pubs and clubs but at a wide range of activities including arts and culture, leisure, food and dining, education and events. What area does the Purple Flag cover? Purple Flag Zone starts at the top of The Quays (including Fitzwilton Hotel) to Reginald's Tower; along The Mall, Parnell St to John St; linking out to include The Odeon Cinema; up John Street through the centre of the city via Michael St, Broad St, JR Square and Barronstrand St; linking Ballybricken & Garda Station via Patrick St; branching off along Georges St and O'Connell St, back to The Quay via Hanover Street.(see the map in our photo album)

Waterford has reclaimed its customary accolade as Ireland’s Cleanest City, taking 6th place out of 40 locations in the IBAL Anti-Litter League 2025 moving up two places since the last survey and rated cleaner than European norms.

We’re delighted to highlight a featured RTE piece on Waterford’s newest safety initiative and why it’s an important step forward for our Purple Flag city centre.

‘Kickstarting the Community’, a community-led awareness, education and rehabilitation programme, has now launched to promote the safe use of e-scooters, e-bikes and motorbikes across Waterford.

With several serious incidents in recent years, this initiative is vital not only for public safety, but also for enhancing a welcoming, accessible and enjoyable city experience for everyone who visits, shops or socialises in Waterford day or night.

✨ Safer streets mean more confident visitors, smoother journeys into the city, and a stronger, more vibrant atmosphere throughout our Purple Flag district.

By encouraging responsible riding, we help ensure that our local shops, hospitality venues and businesses continue to thrive as friendly, safe spaces for the whole community.

A huge thanks to Danny Murphy, CEO of Treo Portlairge, for his leadership in bringing this initiative forward.
