OVERVIEW OF THIS UNIQUE CONCERT:
Follow in the footsteps of the Irish-Greek writer Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, and get a glimpse of his life and literary legacy in this tranquil garden setting at the beautiful Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Gardens in Tramore, before meeting in the Kokoro Heritage Centre for a special concert to celebrate the connections between Irish and Japanese culture.

Join acclaimed Irish harper Tríona Marshall on her unique musical journey: Suaimhneas| Serenity brings together Irish and Japanese music and storytelling traditions, responding to the distinctive landscapes and atmosphere of the gardens which recreate Lafcadio’s life and legacy.

Lafcadio’s Trail

The afternoon begins with a guided musical journey through the gardens. Led by harper Tríona Marshall, audiences will move between different garden spaces, encountering newly commissioned harp music and stories along the way; Triona’s response to her unique surroundings.

She will perform on Irish harp alongside Charlie Marshall on Satsuma Biwa and shakuhachi, Macdara Ó Faoláin on mandolin. Storyteller Nuala Hayes will share stories from Lafcadio Hearn’s Japanese writings, including The Cave of Koko-Ura and Urashima Taro, alongside Irish folklore and music.

The garden trail culminates in a concert in the Kokoro Heritage Centre, featuring:

The concert will feature Tríona Marshall’s new commission for Irish harp and Satsuma Biwa, exploring the meeting of Irish and Japanese musical traditions.

Also featuring a special collaboration between the young harpers of Music Generation Waterford, directed by Jill Devlin, with Macdara Ó Faoláin the afternoon concludes with the Cruit Éireann | Harp Ireland Quartet performing acclaimed composer Bill Whelan’s recent work for four harps, commissioned for Féile na Tána.

MEET THE BYRNE BROTHERS

The two talented Byrne brothers, Lorcan and Cillian, will be joining Killian Browne at the Theatre Royal for our concert in just seven days' time. Cillian plays bass guitar and Lorcan plays drums.

The Byrnes are from Wexford, and you may have heard them as a duo called Basciville at Wexford Arts Centre.

Come and hear The Fabulous Byrne Brothers perform as part of the Killian Browne Jazz Quintet on Friday 11 September at 7.30pm in the Theatre Royal.

Just a reminder that if you hold a season ticket for Waterford Music, that ticket does NOT cover you for the Killian Browne Quintet concert on 11 September. You must pay separately for thIS CONCERT through the Theatre Royal, as this is a special concert in addition to our usual concert season.

Your season ticket will cover you for our other five autumn concerts. At €75 for five concerts, it will save you €25 over the whole concert season. You can also sign up to our newsletter to receive regular updates about our concerts.

TEAMING UP WITH SCOW

We are very pleased to collaborate with Symphony Club of Waterford (SCOW) for our Killian Browne Quintet concert. SCOW is our sister organisation and organises concerts with orchestras and choirs.

Collaborating with SCOW each year gives us the scope to stage concerts on a large scale. Thanks to them, we're staging our first ever live concert in the Theatre Royal. We in turn give SCOW's audiences access to the intimate chamber music experiences that we offer.

So, come along to the Theatre Royal on Friday 11 September, 7.30pm, and hear the intimate sounds of the Killian Browne Jazz Quintet on a large stage.

KILLIAN BROWNE CONCERT SETLIST

The Killian Browne Jazz Quintet have revealed their outline setlist for their upcoming concert on Friday 11 September. If you went to the Killian Browne Quartet concert in September 2024, you'll have another chance to their interpretations of classic tunes like Valse Hot and Inis Oirr

The Quintet will play original tunes like Dance In Blue and Of Course It Is. You'll hear the Quintet's spin on Elliott Smith's Waltz Number Two and Sexy Sadie by the Beatles. And you'll hear a Deise jig.

MEET DYLAN HOWE

This week, we're introducing you to the four other members of the Killian Browne Quintet. Dylan Howe is the man who turned the Killian Browne Jazz Quartet into a quintet. He is a multi-instrumentalist, who started playing mandolin and clarinet at the age of eight.

Dylan has studied jazz, classical and traditional music and has shared a stage with Badly Drawn Boy, The Frank and Walters, Ariel Posen, Adam Neely and many more.

TICKETS FOR THEATRE ROYAL CONCERT

Tickets for the Killian Browne Jazz Quintet concert on 11 September are available for sale on the Theatre Royal website. You book and pick your seat as you would for any event in the Theatre Royal.

Tickets are €27.50 for full price tickets and €12.50 for students. These prices include booking fee. The concert is at 7.30pm on Friday 11 September and is in association with the Symphony Club of Waterford.

FIVE FOR €75 SEASON TICKETS

Our season tickets are for sale again from our website. With your season tickets, you will have access to the five autumn concerts offered by Waterford Music. Instead of paying €100 to go to five concerts, you will be paying €75, which saves you €25 per season, or €5 for concert.

Because our Killian Browne concert on 11 September is in association with SCOW, your season ticket does not cover you for that concert. You book your ticket separately for that at the Theatre Royal Box Office.

THROWBACK TO KILLIAN BROWNE 2024 CONCERT

Back in September 2024, the Killian Browne Jazz Quartet gave a dazzling concert to a packed audience in the Dr Mary Strangman Large Room. Jazz was a new departure for Waterford Music, and the venture into new musical genres paid off, as people clapped and cheered throughout the concert, and rose to their feet at the end.

Now Killian Browne has expanded his quartet into a quintet. At their upcoming concert on Friday 11 September, you'll hear the four musicians from the 2024 concert, Dylan Bible, Lorcan and Cillian Byrne, and Killian himself. But now their sound will be even fuller and richer thanks to the saxophone and trumpet virtuosity of Dylan Howe.
