Grateful, proud, and still smiling after the 5th annual A Slice of Culture — Waterford’s multicultural festival at Wyse Park.
First, a heartfelt thank you to Mayor Seamus Ryan for a warm opening, for staying to speak with so many, and for being friendly, curious, and supportive throughout. And thank you to Diane for her wonderful, heart-warming closing words.
Huge thanks to our volunteers — those coordinated through the Waterford Volunteer Centre and our own Waterford New Communities Network team. We also appreciate the support of Creative Ireland, Waterford Cultural Quarter, and Waterford City & County Council on the day — it made a real difference.
Sincere thanks to The Book Centre for hosting our launch event in their beautiful venue—such a perfect setting.
Our stages and stalls were alive with culture: traditional Irish music from our first-time cultural partners Music Generation Waterford; Colm & Póg on Irish tunes; powerful spoken word from Sasha Terfous; and Afrodéise with West African drumming that had everyone dancing — plus a Hungarian family band Familistic, a Brazilian belly dancer, among others. We had food from several countries, with vendors and community groups offering tasters.
We believe integration is a two-way process. Culture sharing and story exchange help us get to know each other better, break down barriers and stereotypes, and build mutual respect.
The weather tested us (a few adventurous gazebos!), but community spirit won. Wyse Park is a gem in the heart of Waterford City — let’s use it more.
Looking back to the seed of an idea five years ago, I’m so proud of how far we’ve come. Thank you to everyone involved. 💚 Csilla
