After ten years of being together, my partner expressed that he would never consider marriage, deeming it "just a piece of paper." I chose not to respond at that moment, but my behavior the following morning shifted his perspective.
Over the decade, David and I created what I thought was an ideal life: a charming home in the suburbs, shared finances, and a dog. Our friends already labeled us as husband and wife.
During our tenth-anniversary dinner, I cautiously broached the subject of having a simple ceremony to celebrate our bond.
David's expression turned serious. He set his fork aside, leaned back, and let out a cold, condescending laugh.
"I'm never marrying you, Sarah," he stated. "Marriage is simply a worthless piece of paper. It means nothing. If you require a piece of paper for reassurance, that's your problem."
The lack of respect hurt.
I didn’t shed a tear.
I gazed into his eyes, offered a subtle smile, and nodded.
Once home, he went straight to bed, falling asleep immediately, believing he had "won."
Restless, I found myself in the kitchen with my laptop in the dim light, making a choice that would change everything for him.
