And the World Cup begins…!
“Worship during times of turmoil is like emigrating to me.”
— Narrated by Ma‘qil ibn Yasar; recorded by Muslim in Sahih Muslim (2948). The hadith is authentic.
In the early days of Islam, during the time of migration (Hijrah), people would flee from the land of disbelief and its people to the land of faith and its people. When trials and tribulations arise, however, a person protects his religion by turning away from those distractions and devoting himself to worship.
In this hadith, the Prophet ﷺ teaches that worship during times of widespread confusion, trials, and people's preoccupation with worldly affairs carries a reward similar to that of migrating to him ﷺ—meaning, similar in reward to the migration from Makkah to Madinah when it was obligatory.
The reason for the great virtue of worship at such times is that people are generally heedless of worship and occupied with worldly pursuits, and only a few devote themselves to it. Just as migration required leaving one’s homeland, possessions, and desires for the sake of Allah, worship during times of turmoil also requires leaving worldly distractions and desires for the sake of Allah. And just as the early emigrants were few, so too are those who remain devoted to worship during times of trials.
This hadith highlights the immense virtue and value of worship during periods of temptation and distraction.
