"The Troubles”

Where streets turned into fault lines
The fear, division, identity ran through
Families lived with tension
simmering beneath
A hatred hardening permanence became new

A father standing at his window
Watching smoke rise from streets outside
Spotting a neighbour at her doorstep
Building a bridge, not taking sides

Civil rights marches clearly rang out
Where violence erupted, no one was to gain
Catholics and Nationalists were facing discrimination
Homes being burned and communities in pain

A mother’s whisper not to go outside
Young people full of anger, feeling unseen
Pushing dialogue where dialogue was unpopular
Nothing was quite as it seemed

What did silence sound like after violence?
What does division feel like after shame?
How can we believe peace is possible
When we feel softness cannot be regained?

There had to be another way
Where a window could still be opened
Where the crying voices would fade away
And our hearts no longer broken

There was always hope standing in rubble
Hope when anger was unbearably loud
Hope when a tiny flame in heavy wind
A seed of hope in a crowd

One man built bridges instead of barricades
Where children walked streets without fear
A larger than life amongst us
John Hume was a man who cared

Tomorrow Is Another Day

Tomorrow is another chance
To begin without apology
To leave behind the weight
And study life’s philosophy

It is the promise
That storms can end
When the world feels too long
A new moment can transcend

The sun does not ask yesterday
For permission to shine again
Instead it wakes up golden
Where its beauty never ends

Maybe this life is a lesson
We are allowed to start over
Our dreams can flourish too
While walking amongst the sweet clover

Tomorrow is another day
Another page untouched by sorrow
A chance to live again
As time cannot be borrowed

Too Many Wars

How do we end these wars?
What do we need to do?
Come together on a pragmatic focused approach
Where mediation might see us through

Changes in leadership may take place
Giving us hope new decisions will arise
Ceasefires often pause the fighting without resolve
People left wondering will they survive

An armistice agreement could be met
Where future hostilities are suspended
A moral transformation must take place
Where United Nations words are commended

A global mind set must evolve
Where clear thinking can lead us home
To a future that creates world peace
Only then can we call it our own
