🌿 NEW RAMBLE – JUNE BANK HOLIDAY! 🌿
Monday, 01/06 – 12pm to 4pm
Clogher Bog Loop – NEW LOCATION & MODERATE DIFFICULTY
This one is a little different — and a little longer!
We’re heading to Cloger Bog Loop, a brand‑new trail for our group, and it’s going to be a brilliant mix of easy paths, fun challenges, and gorgeous scenery.
And yes… we’re finally pushing ourselves beyond our usual 8 km — nothing extreme, just a lovely stretch to 11 km.

📍 Meeting Point
Clogher Heritage Centre
Eircode: F12 PF99
(near Newtown, a few km from Manulla)
Please allow an extra 10 minutes for travel — the country roads are extremely narrow, and even if navigation says 30 minutes, you will not get there at speed‑limit pace.

🚶‍♀️ About the Walk
This Ramble is moderate difficulty — not because it’s tough, but because it has a bit of everything.
Distance: approx. 11 km
Duration: 12pm–4pm (about 4 hours)
Route Description
• First 7 km: easy, flat bog trails
• This section crosses a heritage blanket bog, a perfect chance to see a real Irish bog up close
• Lots of wildlife around — we even spotted birds of prey!

Then it gets **fun**:
• Cross‑country sections (on a marked trail)
• Walking across and along animal enclosures (mostly cows and sheep)
• Through hedgerows and woodlands
• Over stone walls using stepping stones, stiles and ladders
• A short section through the old cemetery
We’ll follow the Blue Forest Trail and the Brown Heritage Trail, with plenty to see along the way:
• Ruins and abandoned houses
• A ringfort tucked into the landscape
• An ancient church remains and cemetery dating back to around 440 AD
• Supposed footprint of St Patrick
• A beautiful picnic stop under 100‑year‑old beech trees
• And if we’re lucky again — we may meet horse riders enjoying the trails too
Bart and I walked it recently and it’s absolutely worth exploring.

👧 Suitability
This route is NOT suitable for children under 8
(due to high walls, ladders, uneven terrain, and cross‑country sections).

🥾 What You MUST Bring
This time, proper hiking boots are essential.
We will be crossing grasslands, uneven ground, and potentially muddy spots — trainers or sneakers are not safe for this route.
Also bring:
• Rain jacket
• Plenty of drink
• Snacks / small lunch
• Optional: something to sit on for the picnic

💶 Cost
FREE OF CHARGE, thanks to Get Ireland Walking and Mayo County Council, who cover our insurance.

📩 Attendance
Please send me a private message if you’re coming.
This helps us plan numbers and ensure we have the right ratio of walk leaders to participants.
If any parents would like to join as sweepers (the person who walks last to make sure no one is left behind), your help would be greatly appreciated.

⏰ Important
12pm is TAKE‑OFF time, not arrival time.
Please be on time so we can enjoy the full route without rushing.

We’re back after our little weekend break — bookings are open again as normal.
We’re all delighted for Laura and Alan — what a gorgeous day and night in your wonderful company!
And here’s proof that the three of us can look like actual ladies… because usually you’ll find us in leggings, riding gear, and covered in horse hair, hay, and the unmistakable perfume of the stables.

Riding through our little slice of wilderness, where the world goes quiet and the horses remind us to breathe.

Very sad news. Our vet, Brendan, who was our great supporter, helped our horses get back on four hooves so many times, sadly died two days ago.
We will always remember him as one who saved Baz two years ago after a very bad colic and sepsis, calling in with daily injections for five days in a row, making sure Chris got over her laminitis bout and sourcing Duke his rare asthma meds. He also visited Stable Club last summer, giving children practical lesson on how to take vitals, administer medication to horses and answered million questions from children, always with a smile.
He will be missed not only as extremely competent compassionate veterinarian but also friend and honest person who was huge part of local community.
R.I.P. Brendan.

🌿 Thank you, Ramblers! 🌿

Huge thank you to everyone who joined today’s Ramble in Cuillalea Wind Farm and the surrounding woodlands.
Some parts of the forest are still being cleared after last year’s storm, and it was sad to see how much was lost — but every detour we took rewarded us with spectacular views of Croagh Patrick, Nephin, the Ox Mountains and the lakes spread out below us.

We covered 8.6 km in just over three hours, with plenty of stops, chats, laughter… and even a round (or two) of truth or dare.
And somehow, against all odds, we were lucky with the weather.

Thank you all for the company, the good humour, and the easy pace.
Looking forward to the next one already — more rambles, more views, more stories.

🌿 RAMBLE IS ON AGAIN! 🌿
Early May Bank Holiday – Monday 04/05 – 12pm to 3pm
We’re heading back to one of our favourite easy, scenic routes — Spankers Hill in Cuillalea Wind Farm.
I had hoped to introduce a brand‑new walk this time, but the two new routes I scouted (one near Kilkelly, the other near Attymass) turned out to be unsuitable for walkers.
So until I find a safer, better option, we’re sticking with a Ramble we know, love, and can enjoy without surprises.

📍 Meeting Point
Top of Spankers Hill, Cuillalea Wind Farm
There is one windmill with a proper carpark — that’s our spot.

Sunday gave us glorious weather, so we foolishly assumed that at 10am everyone else would still be in bed.
We were wrong. Spectacularly wrong.
Instead, our “quiet” hack toward Knock Airport turned into a full sensory assault: tractors hauling slurry, neighbours armed with mowers, ladders, dogs, pink flowery bushes and other horse‑approved instruments of doom, plus a parade of cars that turned a 15‑minute stretch on a narrow road into a half‑hour test of patience, bravery and sheer stubbornness — for riders, drivers and horses.
We didn’t make it all the way to the airport this time, mostly because the horses still vividly remember the last trip… when a landing plane (or, in their minds, a dragon) nearly ended civilisation as we know it. No need to relive that trauma.
But once we escaped onto the side roads — oh my. Woods, bogs, birdsong, soft light… the kind of peaceful beauty that makes you forget your legs are jelly, and your horse is still offended about that leaf blower.
We finished by washing the beasts, and now these two are officially the fluffiest, most huggable, best‑smelling teddy bears in the west of Ireland.
