The Model provides audiences in the North West with access to cutting-edge contemporary art exhibitions, projects and talks by the best national and international artists. We are home to The Niland Collection which is significant for its focus on the north-west of Ireland, through either artist or subject matter. Through public subscription, bequests, private donations, permanent loans, artist don

ation and a number of other bodies, works by many significant Irish artists have been acquired for the collection, including works of contemporary Irish artists. The Model, which was a school built in 1862, was renovated in 1999 in order to house the amazing collection accrued and so began our journey to where we are today. Our dynamic education department offers workshops, tours, classes and talks for children and adults alike and has developed ground breaking programmes for those with mental and physical disabilities and for Early Years. The Model’s weekly cinema runs in collaboration with Sligo Film Society, one of Ireland’s longest running film clubs as well as films in French and Spanish for schools. We pride ourselves on being multi-disciplinary and in addition to the above we also have our vibrant music programme which includes projects that respond to our exhibitions, while also collaborating with a number of festivals in music, arts, film, theatre and more.

🎻 Join us at The Model next Sunday for the Informal Music Afternoon in September – the ideal way to spend a calm Sunday afternoon in a relaxed atmosphere in a cafe-style setting.

The September programme includes cantatas by Marianna Martines, performed by Sligo Baroque Orchestra with Orla Shannon (soprano).

☕ Come along, have a cup of tea or coffee and some delicious food, to enjoy quality music in a relaxed atmosphere, the ideal way to spend a Sunday afternoon! The concerts starts at 1pm, but we recommend coming at 12.30pm. Foam will be open from 12 noon serving a selection of refreshments and lite bites.

Get your drawing materials ready – Graphite & Easel; Life Drawing Sessions are back at The Model every Friday morning!

First session this Friday

10.30am – 1pm

These popular life drawing sessions are suitable for beginners & professionals alike and everyone is welcome! With a life model in situ, you can hone your drawing skills or simply come along to enjoy drawing with others. Easels and boards are provided, just bring your own drawing materials. €10 per session, pay on arrival.

📢 Final days to see Phil Collins' solo exhibition at The Model before closing on Saturday, 22 September!

The exhibition brings together three recent moving-image installations by Collins, whose work has been exhibited in leading museums and galleries around the world. Through film and video, the exhibition explores themes of community, public space, history and social change, drawing on stories from Ukraine, Slovakia and North Korea.

Widely recognised for creating powerful works that connect personal experiences with wider social and political issues, Collins has spent three decades developing an international practice that challenges conventional documentary filmmaking while remaining rooted in everyday life.

📢 Two more weeks to catch Phil Collins’ solo exhibition at The Model.

Over the course of a deeply engaged practice spanning three decades, Collins has realised ambitious projects that shift perspective between the individual and the collective, situating personal experience within broader historical contexts. Balancing intimacy with social critique, he consistently challenges the conventions of documentary representation, creating works that are emotionally charged, formally adventurous and attentive to the poetics of the everyday.

Part of the exhibition are three recent moving-image installations by Phil Collins: ‘Ceremony’ (2018), 'Home to You’ (2019), and ‘An Interval’ (2018/2026).

Part of the exhibition is the feature-length film installation ‘Ceremony’ (2018), that, a century after the October Revolution, follows the journey of a Soviet-era statue of Friedrich Engels – co-founder, with Karl Marx, of communist theory – from a village in Eastern Ukraine to Manchester, the city where Engels lived and worked for more than twenty years. There, it was unveiled as a new public monument and welcomed by local communities during a live broadcast closing the 2017 edition of Manchester International Festival. In the year leading up to this moment, Collins collaborated with activists, organisations and people across the city to explore the social conditions of austerity Britain in the twenty-first century.

Combining elements of the road movie, experimental television, and socialist mass gatherings, Ceremony prompts broader questions, such as what might Engels make of the world today, and where do continuities with the struggles of his time remain visible?
